Nathan Lint

2008. What a year. In my life, it sucked. I had some of my biggest ups and worst downs of my life. This roller coaster is finally coming to an end and for that I'm grateful. Just to be alive and another year older at this point in time sometimes seems like a miracle. In music, it wasn't awful, I just wish I had a better chance to check out some of the more hyped releases of the year. I usually don't enjoy them as much as other people anyway.

To my closest friends, without you, I am nothing. You make life worth living, and I am where I am today because of you. To everyone new in my life, I welcome many wonderful years of friendship. To everyone I have lost touch with, I intend it mend that.

To Detroit and its outlying areas, you dying breed, your broken edifices may discourage some, but I know the truth. Your people know what it feels like to be in a depression, and we as a people will live on. Even if we have to relocate for a period of time. As for the bands, lets make this a 2009 to remember.

Overhyped, OverratedI loved Sink or Swim, I knew these guys were gonna get big. The 59 Sound blew me away, and has some awesome playback value. Polar Bear Club was hard hitting and has really packed a punch after seeing their live show. Good Old War's harmonies are great and I was never a huge Days Away fan so this was definitely my surprise of the year. Sheena and Lemuria really kicked my ass with their record this year, there's something for everyone in this release. All in all, a good year, but really more of a prequel to what i'm expecting to be the best year for music in a while.

Yes, I realize Polar Bear Club, Living With Lions and Lemuria all have had EP's and various 7"'s released before 2008, but they were still relatively unknown outside of their respective scenes and I think these were the records that really put the bands over. This is why they were chosen for this category.

Brand New will bring sex to my ears once more.

The musicianship on that record is just flawless. It also helps that Good Old Wars' harmonies kept me singing pretty much the entire year. I'm looking forward to a stellar 2009 from you guys!

Another staffer disappointed by A Band In Hope, what gives. I fell head over heels for this album the moment I heard it, and I need to know what it is you dislike about it?

allisterkid 12/29/08 07:42 PM

Very nice list.

FourStarters 12/29/08 09:01 PM

Holy shit at someone showing The Ergs some love.

Nice work, Nate.

ddb43 12/31/08 11:53 AM

One of the better lists, but what about Off With Their Heads...simply amazing! Also, LaGrecia put out one hell of a release. At least you nailed TGA.

Joe Lemble 12/31/08 03:56 PM

The Fireworks Album is amazing ;)
The Swellers rule.

The only reunion I was able to see was Race the Sun - but it was epic.
