Understandable cannon fodder only because they were not Saiyans. Before it was revealed Goku was a Saiyan, they all were integral to the show. Tien was even stronger than Goku for a period.

Most of them could not have happened in the main timeline. The new ones fit in between the Buu Saga and when Goku meets Uub at the end of the show.

I wish they would do a tournament movie/miniseries like in the original Dragonball. Both tournaments in Z get disrupted. It would be super popular for settling a lot of debates about power levels.
