Love Me Electric - Medicine and Magic EP

Of course it would be irrational to relate a certain caliber of music with the geographic location that particular band spawned from. Right? Whether you like to believe surroundings influence the quality of any given musician’s talent or not, one must agree that Chicago has always been a hub of sorts for truly capable acts. Flameshovel Records’ roster should speak for itself when I say there is something undeniably charming and inescapable about those groups brought up in the Windy City. Love Me Electric hopes to carry on the city’s tradition, if not exceed expectations, with their adorable brand of pop-rock that will undoubtedly bring a tear to fans of Motion City Soundtrack and the like.

Almost immediately, with the EP’s intro track “You’re Not Getting It From Me”, you’ll catch LME’s inherent spunk. Punk-minded tempos scatter around colorful pop familiarity, subduing, at some point, to Joe and Dan Nicorata’s congenial high-pitched swoons. Natural, speaking of, sense of how a good song progresses seems readily apparent in each of the four tracks, as well. Track two, “I’ll Count to Four”, combines a story-telling element in the verses with an eager synth layer and dynamic guitar riffs. A gang chant of, “I might get upset when you say that you’ll call and you don’t/Understand how it feels to be alone/Yeah and as I sit next to my 3-string guitar/I’d like to see you/But your boyfriends place is way too far” closes out the song perfectly.

Capturing both a healthy dose of studio-born ingenuity and a certain degree of live energy, the production is far from overbearing as it allows the band to explore their sound a little bit more than expected. The listener gets a true sense of what I mean in the third track entitled “Cardiology”. You could tell the song was put together expertly, but the overall sound retains the spontaneous nature and “take it how it comes” principle live shows are known for. The rhythm section plays off the ups and downs of Nicorata’s smooth verse development; guitar magic materializing when the opportunity in the various bridges presents itself, creating a wonderfully down-to-earth anthem. The final track on the EP, “The Truth About Liars”, is the weakest in that it fails to draw the listener in as well as the previous tracks most certainly do. Stiff guitar oscillations somehow fit awkwardly under steady vocals, lacking any of the oomph to correctly end such a high-energy release.

Love Me Electric has all the right moves to be their genre’s next poster-boy. There’s really nothing that wrong with Medicine and Magic. It captures the band’s upbeat swagger, proving they can outshine even the genre’s Warped Tour veterans. Those who regret jumping on the Fall Out Boy bandwagon too late (read: you poser!) should have a go with these Chicago-ians. There’s something high-voltage about them that just may shock pop-rock back into full-force.

Its great that these guys got reviewed.... They definitely deserved it, and by the way great review overall, these guys put in a lot of hard work, and to get a positive review will hopefully help lead to other great things. I personally love their ep, honestly can sit there and listen to it three or four times and it never gets old... the songs are soo catchy that one can not help but to move to the beat, or sing along. Their shows are always a blast, they know how to have fun with their fans.... If people readin this have not checked out what they have to offer, you need to get over to their page and check that stuff out cuz i can guarantee that you will find it quite good. Their myspace is www.myspace.com/lovemeelectric check that stuff out if u want to listen to some quality stuff
