Five and Alive: Keeping Up the Pace in 2012

Posted by - 01:16 PM on 01/02/12
Happy 2012 to every staffer, user, industry folk, band and reader alike. We just came off quite a year for music. I'm still going over some "end of the year" lists from friends and networks and am discovering what I missed. In particular, five things really stuck out to me this past year. You can check out what I have to say here, and don't forget to scan over our EOTY lists one last time before we start rocking out into what I expect to be another exceptional year. Besides a particular album or band or song, what were your favorite musical moments of 2011? Let's have one last toast before the world ends.

December was pretty intense between the American Nightmare reunion and Brand New Year's Eve show.

Besides AN, I got to see Beach House, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Rival Schools and Seahaven for the first time, which was cool.

The emergence of Rise as a label stockpiled with great bands.

Seeing Haste the Day's last show in Indianapolis was probably my musical highlight of the year. While I didn't like their last two albums, they were for a couple years one of my favorite bands, and they got me into heavier music. The show was incredible.

My Highlights;

- White Denim @ Johnny Brendas, Philadelphia, PA. That band is the real deal.
- Thomas Hunter & White China Gold. Really great record, and I think very awesome that its was all done pretty DIY, yet has crazy arrangements and a brilliant mix. DIY doesnt have to mean yelled vocals and dirty guitars.
- and I agree with Adam, stacked tours. Makes shows far more enjoyable.

Im stoked for alot of great releases next year including The Mars Volta, D'Angelo, Fang Island, Dirty Projectors, Lettuce, Good Old War and Dr. Dog.

My favorite musical moments in 2011 was getting to see not one, but two solo acoustic Max Bemis shows, one in the early spring and the other last month.
