Blows my mind that people think that the newer pop punk bands have less whiny voices than the older ones.

the best pop-punk was the pop-punk being made when i was 20-22 years old (2000-2003).

ya know, NFG, Midtown, Movielife, Saves the Day, Yellowcard, Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, Brand New, Starting Line etc.

It felt like every other week some band in their early 20's was dropping some instant-classic record within the pop-punk genre and it was cool to be the same age as said bands and see them as my peers.

the stuff today, four year strong, all time low, set your goals, wonder years, i suppose that's what you're calling the "new" pop punk, and they are all decent and they all do the hardcore breakdowns stuff and write more complex songs but i feel like all of them are derivities of the early 2000's pop-punk scene. it doesn't seem like ya'll have it nearly as cool as I had it 10 years ago.

I remember when blink and green day were basically everything in this genre, then it exploded. In good and bad ways...
I will always respect the "old school" pop punk I you could even call it that, but admittingly I like new age more. I think there is a lot of blur between which artists are actually pop punk and which ones cross barriers but for the most part, I think Fireworks is the best legitimate pop punk band out right now. They do have some undertones of different genres but they are pop punk at their core and it shows through out all their music.

Old definitely had more classic album releases, and were better at just musically defining a generation, but they were repetitive in lyrical content and had the worst vocals- way too nasally.

New was alright for a while, but it's kind of starting to get a little awful based on the crowds that are going to their shows and people trying to lump bands that are all friends with one another/associated with the same general scene into the "pop-punk" group.

Sidenote: I was at a TWY show last month and some fourteen year old scene girl was behind me in the merch line saying to her friend, "Alison is sooo lucky. She gets to kiss Soupy anytime she wants."

This is tough, because I consider the Ergs, For Science, and the Copyrights all new pop punk. But... I also love the Descendents.

Don't get me wrong, both eras of pop punk have spawned some really awesome bands. Bands like Blink-182, Saves The Day and NFG are great. I have to say, because I grew up listening to many of them, I prefer the old. But new pop punks are impressive as well. TSSF, TWY, Mixtapes, Fireworks and A Loss For Words are all really great bands.

If old pop punk means Blink 182, Sum 41, Bowling For Soup or Green Day and new pop punk means shit like All Time Low, then I believe this question is quite easy to answer.
