This site cracks me up... The fact that its called ABSOLUTEPUNK yet most of what is discussed in these forums has little to nothing to do with actual punk

That's a new one

I for one couldn't really care less about punk. I joined this site because of all the other things discussed.

When counting the Beatles and Nirvana as overrated, I think you should look at the influence they had on mainstream music (which of course trickles down to indie/underground music as well) and both were VERY influential.

There's little to no chance you know anything more about hardcore, punk or any of its offshoots than I do.

Defending the Sex Pistols hints at that.

Actually if you knew anything at all, you would realise that despite the fact that a lot of punk bands were indeed far better than the Sex Pistols, they still managed to be one of the bands that put the whole genre on the spotlight. Many bands that came afterwards were influenced by the way they played, dressed and acted like. There's controversy, but you can't deny that they were icons for the genre, pretty much like the Ramones and the Clash. They're not my favorite punk band, and they're far from the best in my opinion. But you can't label them as the worst thing that has ever happened to punk rock music, when in fact they pretty much helped to create the genre in the first place.

the sex pistols are kinda the symbol for fake punk- they were just trying to cash in on the movement of people willing to pay for it. their approach and ethos was absolutely calculated to do so. "putting the genre in the spotlight" sure, but how much is that worth? what they paved the way for is shit, really-- they're kinda universally known as one of the big bands to be so superficial so I'd say they paved the way for Hot Topic shit and artists who don't even really like their own music as opposed to anything worthwhile
that being said, Never Mind The Bollocks has a few fun singles on it, though its entirety is pretty ehhh
I don't know why people ignore actual worthwhile albums from that era in favor of acclaiming the sex pistols (wipers, husker du, flipper, black flag, negative approach, void, faith, ugh too many)

Agreed!

But at the same time a lot of north-american kids that ended up being in bands, or getting into punk music, specially from Washington DC, discovered punk rock through the Pistols. A lot of great bands that came in that area, like Bad Brains or Scream, were influenced by them.

Just so we don't get off the subject here, I'm not defending the Pistols by claiming they were the creators of punk rock, or the best thing that has ever happened to music. All I was trying to say is that you can't deny their importance. They are far from the worst thing that has happened to the genre.

Sex Pistols is one of the worst things to happen to punk.

They were the Asking Alexandria of punk in the '70s.
this exactly this it's very refreshing to hear a 19 yr old saying this

I never insinuated that they were anything near the worst thing in the genre I don't know who you're getting that from... I don't have very strong feels towards TSP. And you really think bands like Bad Brains and Scream were influenced by TSP?

Either way, I'm not sure why you're defending the band that much... this was only brought up in the first place because the first post labeled them as one of the two most important things to ever happen to punk. That was the only thing up for debate. You don't agree with that, do you? OK good so we're on the same page...

The impact that Nirvana and other Seattle grunge bands had on the music industry can still be seen today. Listen to any alternative rock radio station and bands like Creed, Nickelback and countless others are still trying to recreate what Nirvana and Pearl Jam did. Cobain dying had little to no impact in what is popular and played on alternative radio today, and absolutely no effect on punk rock. Punk rock has never and will never see radio play, simply for the fact that it doesn't have the mass appeal that the simple minded population of this world see in alternative/grunge. Even if Cobain were still alive, everything would still be the same, except that we probably would have gotten 1 or 2 more mediocre Nirvana albums, and a bunch of shitty side-projects.

And since I didn't feel like reading every single post, I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but, if Cobain had lived, would the Foo Fighters be around today?

tl;dr: Cobain's death had no impact on punk rock and if Cobain would have lived, Foo Fighters?

I'm going to address this post in sections, because so much is wrong with it that it's necessary for me to do so. Also, before we get too far into this, I'm going to state up front that personally, I don't really care for The Sex Pistols' music.

the sex pistols are kinda the symbol for fake punk-
What....? How can one of the first punk bands EVER be the symbol for "fake punk?" Other than the Ramones, The Sex Pistols were one of the first punk bands, and the first punk band in England.

First of all, punk rock is never about money. People who want to be famous and get rich don't say, "Hey, we should start a punk band!" Go up to any random person on the street and I guarantee they've never even heard of Sid Vicious or Johnny Rotten. In the mid 1970's, the economy in England was absolute shit and people were fed up with the Royal Family. People were angry. So they got together and wrote punk songs about how pissed they were. Just listen to God Save The Queen or Anarchy In The UK.

Never Mind The Bollocks, musically, is a horrible album BUT, one cannot deny the fact that it is one of the most influential punk albums of all time. People do not "ignore actual worthwhile albums from that era." All of the bands you mentioned came after The Sex Pistols and were more than likely influenced by The Sex Pistols. Just give credit were credit is due.

Whoever's writing the Sex Pistols off as a fake punk band doesn't realize that most of the punk bands at the time were inspired by the Sex Pistols, including the Clash. So who wins, internet? Who wins?

Finally, someone who actually knows what they're talking about.
