I can see the point of the editorial. When you put on that jersey, you're voluntarily choosing to represent the country. Not you. Your country. Nobody made him choose to represent the USA; he chose it himself, willingly.

It's cute that he is proud of where he is from but he was raised in the USA, and was open to opportunities he otherwise wouldn't have. It's the team that trained him and got him through the Olympics. I'm not offended, but it's dumb, and the author is completely right that there are groups of Mexican Americans with serious identity issues.
