I'm thinking about starting a collection, but I'm in need of a turntable. Does anybody have any recommendations? I'm looking for one that I can convert vinyl into digital that I can play on my iPod.

The turntabls that have digital links are bullshit, its just a usb out. You can just use RCA to 1/4 inch from a good turntable. Most of the ones that do conversion are belt drive, the best turntables that have held the reigns for over 25 years are Technics 1200mkII or III. Simply put, they are the standard.

Other will argue this or that for other direct drive decks from Stanton, Numark etc, but bottom line is Technics are a staple in all clubs since their introduction for a reason and remain to be the audiophile standard.

Signed records usually arent worth much... sometimes ruins the value if its original press.

I just realized I haven't gone record shopping in a while. I think the last record I bought was the Two Tongues Picture disk lol. I think I picked up a Specials remastered release on 180g vinyl, I can't remember. I also bought Beastie Boys - Ill Communication on 180g vinyl as well recently.

The problem is most belt drives dont actually spin at a constant speed. You want direct drive and the most reliable is a 1200. Its worth it, specially since they are half the price now as they used to be.

As for the guy saying whats a vinyl, I dont know about you but having been buying vinyl/wax/RECORDS since I was 15 this is the only site I've seen people have an issue with the term vinyl. Relax. There are more important things in life.

Ok, so what would you recommend for a turntable for around $100 (links)? I'm looking for the best quality available for an entry-level turntable.

But you don't want belt drive, it's better to save money and get a direct drive Technics 1200. Honestly, a shitty belt drive will 1) not be playing on time, 2) good quality needles/carts might not fit the form factor so your eating the shit out of your records.

1200s are the "standard", the Gibson or Fender of Turntables. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=technics+1200

If you're adamant about about going cheap at least make sure they are DIRECT DRIVE and made by Numark or Stanton, but man, I hate giving that advice. You really shouldnt put your wax on anything less than a 1200 with either shure or ortofon carts.

I highly recommend http://www.ortofon.com/

The alignment of the arm on the deck to the cart to the needle will all effect your vinyl, you could buy a 30 dollar deck and a cheap needle and cart but your wax will sound like shit in a couple of months and start browning out on you.

I can take a panoramic shot of my record room for you, theres over 1000 records that aren't doubles in there, counting doubles maybe 1500? I just hate seeing people start a collection with a deck that's basically chewing up your records every time you listen to them.
