The Butterfly Effect to Mulholland Dr.

That's some goddamn range.

I haven't seen that one, but the rest of his top five are among my most hated films. It is an eclectic list, though.

Decided to do a list and I kept trying to stop at a multiple of five and next thing I knew I was at twenty-five. No possible way to order them, and overall I'd just call them my favorite twenty-five films right now. Unsurprisingly (for me, since my knowledge of earlier film is limited), the 90s and 00s are the most represented decades, and Grandrieux the most featured auteur with three films. As cshadows2887 said, bring on the hate.

Querelle (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1982)
A Casa aka The House (Sharunas Bartas, 1997)
Sátántangó (Béla Tarr, 1994)
Sombre (Philippe Grandrieux, 1998)
No Quarto da Vanda aka In Vanda's Room (Pedro Costa, 2000)
L'Homme qui ment aka The Man Who Lies (Alain Robbe-Grillet, 1968)
Kamen aka Stone (Aleksandr Sokurov, 1992)
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (David Lynch, 1992)
La vie nouvelle aka A New Life (Phillipe Grandrieux, 2002)
ユリイカ aka Eureka (Shinji Aoyama, 2000)
Showgirls (Paul Verhoeven, 1995)
Barry Lyndon (Stanley Kubrick, 1975)
Out 1 (Jacques Rivette, 1971)
Combat d'amour en songe aka Love Torn in Dream (Raúl Ruiz, 2000)
Un Lac aka A Lake (Phillipe Grandrieux, 2008)
Inland Empire (David Lynch, 2006)
O Sangue aka The Blood (Pedro Costa, 1989)
Edvard Munch (Peter Watkins, 1974)
As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty (Jonas Mekas, 2000)
สุดเสน่หา aka Blissfully Yours (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2002)
La vallée close aka Closed Valley (Jean-Claude Rousseau, 1995)
Duelle (une quarantaine) (Jacques Rivette, 1976)
Сталкер aka Stalker (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1979)
The Hart of London (Jack Chambers, 1970)
aka The Hole (Tsai Ming-liang, 1998)

When I get more room on my computer and a better ratio on PtP, or DVD service back on Netflix (whichever happens first), I really need to look into some of these, because I've heard of literally four of them.

Thanks for the interest. Overall, there's a definite bias toward visual poetry, psychosexual themes, emphasis of atmosphere/mood over story/message/character, and duration (read: the long take/slow cinema). Many (if not most) will not be available on Netflix, and some (e.g. Kamen and Out 1) are probably not on PtP. Karagarga would be your best option; I think all but Showgirls are there.

Duly noted. I know I have an account on Karagarga, but it's gone almost completely unused for a month or so. I wouldn't be surprised if it's suspended due to inactivity. Might have to check that tonight.

It's a massive pile of shit.

It was bashed by critics, but it was well received among audiences (Rotten Tomatoes: 81%; IMDb: 7.7). And I'm pretty sure that if Ashton Kutcher wasn't starring it wouldn't be so hated. It was the first movie to hit me, so it's a truly special one for me.

Anyway, those are just my favorites. Relating plays a big role. I'm aware there are better films out there (Mulholland Dr. is the best thing I've ever seen, though and, creatively, it opened doors for me, more than anything else).

By the way, it's particularly hard for me to understand how someone can hate American Beauty. I really think that's one of the best dramas ever made. Great characters, excellent performances, hypnotizing ambience, perfect tension build up, beautiful emotional ending... It's always the first film I recommend. I think everyone can at least enjoy it...

Fight Club
American History X
Dogma
Toy Story 1 & 3
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Milk
Who Framed Roger Rabbit

All of those are pretty well up there in my opinion. Although, there are a lot more movies I need to see before making a proper top 10.

I think it's one of the worst dramas ever made. I can't think of a single good thing about it. The main character is an obnoxious man-child, the wife is an unrealistic shrew, the repressed homosexual homophobe is offensive, the kid is annoying. It is a lazy and dumb "critique" of suburbia.

Exactly all of this. One of the most obnoxious, ham-fisted, horrible suburbia pieces ever.

I could've added more, but these are just so much better than every movie I've ever seen in my entire life.
