I need a little assistance. I'm a junior in high school, and I'm in a sophomore dominated math class, Algebra II. Almost all of my friends are in the correct junior math class, pre calc. That's embarrassing enough. I'm a straight A student in all honors classes, and the only reason why I was pushed back was because I screwed up in middle school on the high school math placement tests. That's the thing. I'm absolutely horrible at certain aspects of math. I have the ability to understand it and get A's in my class, but my issue is that I am not the least bit confident in my work. When ever I take tests, do homework, etc. I always question myself. Even on concepts as easy as order of operation. Bottom line, it is pretty easy for me to comprehend math, but my confidence is far off point. How can I fix this?

I would appreciate advice very much. I'm trying to step up my game in math, and being a level behind is embarrassing enough.

Don't question yourself. If you understand and comprehend it, then you should know at least 70% of it, meaning you can pass high school and college courses. Just go with your gut instinct and don't look back. The worst that will happen is that you'll end up in a math course in college that doesn't actually give you math credit. But you'll be taking it throughout your senior year, you'll be fine. I took Pre-Calc in 10th grade and passed my college entry exam by 3 points in the math section.

Short Version - You question yourself? Stop. You'll be fine.

You're not good at math, that's ok, accept it and the fact that it won't stop you from being successful in the future.

Math was the one and only course in my entire educational career that I couldn't get A's in. Also the only classes I ever actually failed, both in high school and college. As long as you don't focus on a career that involves a lot of math, you'll be fine. I promise. Do what you can to pass and when you're done, peace the fuck out.

I get good grades in everything but the past 2 years have failed math in high school. You'll get through it though.

I got a low grade in Math when I was in high school. I was so disappointed that time because I was an achiever since Elementary.

But the thing is, I cannot just say "whatever, it's fine", cause it's not. My class rank and GPA require me to be good t everything. I'm 17th out of 800 and want to get to the top 10 by the time I graduate. "Accepting it" isn't a solution.

You remind me of myself. I often failed math tests, because working with numbers is like working with any medium: they can be arranged, re-arranged, and fractured into a variety of compelling and interesting results. I am into epistemology. Perhaps, this will interest you. Many questions in epistemology include: What exists? Does it matter?

There are arguments like "numbers exist, we use them to measure things" however the fundamental argument behind why and how we use them can be interesting. Maybe once you question the very basics of math itself (do numbers exist? what is calculus? Is non-practical math which proves itself practical in extremely odd real world situations proof of anything deeper in math?)

I could always write a paper in college, as someone who has a BA in English from UNC, however it wasn't until I took math for non math major classes in college that I began to understand how interesting math can be. State required testing sucks, sorry you gotta go through it.

Then the other solution is... get better at it?
