The Motel Life - Those Bruises

Motel Life, TheThose Bruises
Record Label: Unsigned
Release Date: July 23rd, 2012
There’s a lyric on the first song “House” from California indie outfit The Motel Life’s new EP Those Bruises that goes, “You’ll never find what you expect in here.” In a way, that’s really what this EP is all about; what you think you’ll be expecting is not what you’ll hear at all. Well, unless you’re expecting to hear an indie-rock band with a lot of potential, but who isn’t quite perfect just yet. If you were expecting to hear that, that’s exactly what you’ll hear. There’s not too much to say about this band, other than they’re a great band, but definitely need to improve in certain places. I must mention that this is the first release I’ve heard by this band, so I have nothing to compare to this EP to. I feel that’s very important, because I’m just simply writing this based on solely what I hear on this EP alone. What I do hear is a band that does have a lot of talent, but isn’t quite amounting to their potential just yet. Those Bruises clocks in at about 23 minutes, which is good for an EP of this caliber. It’s not too short, but not too long. It’s exactly the way it should be, honestly.

The EP starts off with “House,” as I mentioned in the first sentence, and it’s also the shortest of the six songs on the record at less than 3 minutes. Is that a bad thing? Nope, not at all, but it’s a rather short song, nonetheless. About 30 seconds in, vocalist Michael Paul Escanuelas’s soft voice sings silently as guitarists Judcody Limon and Alvaro Hernandez play a very slow guitar riff. However, it suddenly kicks up and Escanuela yelps for a minute or so, which is quite interesting, but not very memorable. It’s certainly not something your average indie band would do, but it’s not quite impressive, either. The last 20 seconds repeats the first 30 seconds in the sense that it closes out quite slowly, but it’s not bad. As far as opening tracks go, it’s not the best, but it does hold up, nonetheless. Right from the bat, it is clear that Escanuela has a rather unique voice, and can sing quite well. He’s not perfect, either, but he’s definitely one of the better singers I’ve heard. Second track “Doctor’s Note” is a much more “faster” track, but not one of the better ones, either. While “House” has some great lyrics, this track has some rather mediocre lyrics. As far as the overall track itself, it’s just that – mediocre. It’s not great, but it’s not bad, either. After rather enjoyable track, “Bruises,” the real highlights of the record comes in the form of the last three songs, “Lying About My Age,” “Just Leave,” and “Cold Hands.” These tracks are definitely the best three, and the last half is great. Fourth track “Lying About My Age” is certainly my favorite track of the whole EP; it has great lyrics, the vocals shine, and the instrumentation just really works throughout the whole song. Next track “Just Leave” has some very emotional lyrics that I can certainly relate to, and finally, album closer “Cold Hands” is another track that I really like, and it really is a good album closer.

As I mentioned in the introduction, this is a band that does have potential, but it’s not all here on this EP. If they keep making records, I’m sure they could be capable of great things, but for what it is, it’s quite enjoyable.

Recommended If You LikeManchester Orchestra, Band of Horses, Arcade Fire, etc.

This review was odd and poorly written. I could not take it seriously. It baffles me what people are missing when it comes to The Motel Life. Maybe you need to experience every release they've had but I truly think this group is the biggest gem in the unsigned world. Great group of guys, phenomenal live show.. Overall incredible band that people should pay more attention to.

I really enjoyed this EP, and I definitely would recommend it. My favorite track on the EP was "Lying About My Age." That's the song I would definitely check out.

I hate to sound rude, but just because you didn't agree with what I said does not mean my review is terrible? In my personal opinion, I don't think is the best band I've ever heard (while I did highly enjoy it), and I'm sorry my review did not meet your expectations. But while I didn't give this EP a 100% rating doesn't mean my review was terrible and "poorly written." Come on.

I was not saying the review was poorly written based on your opinion on the EP, it was just hard to follow for me and very repetitive at times. Poor choice of words on my part as I was not trying to be rude. I also wasn't singling you out when I was referring to people not seeing the greatness with this band.. Your critique of the EP is your opinion, totally! I just have a different opinion when it comes to things like saying the lyrics aren't strong, basically calling the band mediocre, etc. I get you were saying the group is overall good and not terrible, which is awesome. I just think if more people took the time to listen to all the work put out by the band they'd be surprised with the quality. If you liked Those Bruises check out the first two records for sure.

Oh, I'm totally sorry for coming off as rude; I thought you just didn't like the review, because I didn't like the EP as much. I don't like it when people do that, and I see it all too often, so I didn't want that to be the case. I know this review was rather repetitive, but I didn't have too much to say about it, but I didn't want it to be really short, either. It's not that I didn't like this EP, or even think they're terrible, I think they could be really, really awesome, but I thought the lyrics were rather weak at times (mainly a few tracks), but VERY strong in others. I really want to listen to more stuff by this band, because I did like what I heard. I wasn't trying to say that people SHOULDN'T listen to them, because I did give it all 8s. I don't typically give something the same rating, but I thought it was quite suitable for this one.
