Great review! Definitely got me excited. it's good to hear someone say what I'm hoping for. I just checked out "Graphic Nature" and "Entombed" and I'm pretty stoked.
Also, for anyone really bothered about the production, there's a hi-res, less compressed release here. Warner Bros. has been doing this bit with their recent releases. Left (top) channel is the CD version, Right channel is the version I linked to. Check out the difference.
HDtracks has been fucking amazing lately with the WB releases. Thanks for the heads-up.
This is an awesome review, I'm not sure I enjoy it quite as much as I do Diamond Eyes yet, but it's a fantastic album. Their softer songs always come off accomplished to me, but "Leathers" shows the metal edge they've never lost better than ever. Definitely in my top ten for the year.
I'm not really sure why all the complaints about the production. I've heard albums that sound way more overly-compressed than this. I think the mix is pretty even, no instruments/vocals really interfering with anything else.
Overall great review, but I think Diamond Eyes is definitely closer to Around The Fur and Koi No Yokan is definitely closer to White Pony as far any similarity. Needless to say this is my Album of the year and It would be pretty damn awesome if the Deftones won another grammy because of this record...just sayin'
