I think it'll absolutely leave a lasting mark since the rappers/artists in the genre who have made any sort of statement about the topic are very few and far between.
I honestly think hip hop could be ready for that change, maybe not the ASAP hip hop scene, but those who embrace and seek out independent / less ignorant (don't get me wrong though, love ASAP) music in the genre.
