But does that mean they still have some bearing to the current state of the metal scene? No and neither do Misfits in the punk scene. Misfits honestly haven't been relevant in 30 years, not since Danzig, the only thing that band had going for it, left. Since then, they've been a revolving cast of cartoon characters trying to mimic a time they were actually relevant for people who are gullible enough to pay money to watch Jerry Only butcher their music. Same goes to Metallica, who are riding purely on the legacy of their four great records and one okay record and has contributed nothing relevant or noteworthy since. So no, neither band is relevant.
