Sleep City - 07.30.13

Interviewed by
Sleep City - 07.30.13The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:

Sleep City
(M = Matthew Baglini, guitar)
(W = William Malloy, vocals)
(G = Gregg Vigneau, drums)
(R = Rene Legault, bass / vocals)
(K = Kyle Asselin, guitar)

1. How did you get your band name?
M: Unfortunately there really is no grand story to tell. An ex-member / co-founder of the band had been dead set on the name Sleep City Lights for a while and for the sake of arguing we landed on that name. After months of working with this ex-member we decided it was time to part ways and change our sound so with that we simply stripped the name down to Sleep City and released an album later that year.

2. How did this band get started?
M: Growing up I had always been in bands, nothing serious just your typical high school garage bands. But in 2007 I was diagnosed with leukemia and was bed-ridden for months. While in quarantine my uncle gave me a computer on which I wrote songs every day. After being released from the hospital in the summer of 2008 I decided it was time I found a band to play the songs I had written and so was born Sleep City Lights. Today the lineup is completely different but every change made has been a positive one.

3. What bands are you influenced by?
M: Thrice, Appleseed Cast, The Starting Line, Miles Davis
G: Dopapod, American Football, TREOS, Fear Before The March Of Flames
K: Copeland, As Cities Burn, Miley Cyrus, Utopia.
R: Mike Kinsella (Owen / American Football), The Dear Hunter

4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
M: The Receiving End Of Sirens because every single show I have ever seen them play has been absolutely ridiculous. And of course Between The Heart And The Synapse is a personal favorite of all of ours.

5. Best food to eat on tour?
M: A classic PB&J for sure. Simple, easy, cheap, and you wont get sick from it.

6. Why should people listen to your band?
M: For the same reason you should listen to anyone's band - if you never listen to new music you'll never find new bands that you enjoy. If I had never listened to Brand New for the first time I wouldn't have known that Deja Entendu would end up being one of my favorite records.

7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?
M: Tiger Woods. That guy is set for life and golf has to be the only sport that I know of where you can compete into your 40s and still stand a chance of winning.

8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
M: All of our families, our manager (Ammon Child), and Rhys Santa Maria from Film From the Future Productions.

9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
M: Honestly, there are so many things I would change that I don't even know where to start. I suppose the main thing I would change is how widely available quality recording is these days. As great as it is that we can get an album quality production done at a tenth of the cost you could 20 years ago it has also hurt this industry tremendously. In the last 10 years I have seen a huge number of bands that trade musical talent and experience for a well produced record that is sonically pleasing. As a musician whose spent most of his life dedicated to studying and writing music its tough to see bands who haven't played their instruments longer than a year or two become a mass success.

10. Memorable tour experience?
M: While on tour in Michigan with a band that we can not mention the sound guy decided to turn off the stage mics because the band we were on tour with broke the ceiling. As retribution for shutting off their sound the singer of the other band stormed across the bar and knocked out the 60+ year old sound guy. Needless to say the cops were called and the singer of the other band was thrown in jail for the night. After things had calmed down everyone who remained and had not been thrown in jail for the night drove to a walmart parking lot where we grilled up some hot dogs and played beer pong in the parking lot with our merch tables. What a night.

11. What does AP.net mean to you?
M: For me AP.net is the place I go to anytime I want an unbiased opinion on a new album. I have seen writers on the site bash on some of their own favorite bands if the album they put out wasn't up to previous standard. There are hundreds of blog sites these days that write nothing but puff pieces for their favorite albums but with AP.net I know I can trust the information coming through.

12. What is your favorite song to play?
M: No Cure
G: Four Season Love
K: So Close
W: Anything off of our new record.
R: Beneath The Leaves or Ghost Town

13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
M: Anywhere cold. I dig the beach but me and the sun don't get along.
W: Any beach anywhere
K: Honestly being on the road with the band is amazing. Mini vacation in a new town every day.
G: The open road.
R: Vermont.

14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
M: Billy Joel, The Eagles, Tony Bennet, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra
W: James Taylor, Boston, Natalie Cole, Gloria Estefan, all 90s music.
K: Intro music to the Jetsons.
G: Van Halen
R: pre-high school: MxPx and Good Charlotte, high school: Fall Out Boy's Take This To Your Grave.

15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
M: The ability to teleport myself and other things to anywhere. I'd take my guitar to some rundown island every day and then teleport back to bed each night.
W: The ability to extract the sounds from my head in .wav format.
K: To be able to be invisible. Being able to get away from any kind of interaction would be awesome at times. Or to teleport… into space, and be able to survive in space. Space is sweet.
G: A bag that could hold 99 of each item. Loading into shows would be a breeze.
R: The ability to communicate with animals, duh.

16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
M: Nothing too crazy. I usually spend the time before we play tuning and warming up.
G: 3 beers. No more, no less.
K: A couple beers. I also go over the set on guitar before we go on. Occasionally I find some local food if we get there early enough.
R: Sing a bit, but more than anything talk to people who are there to see us. Seeing them pumped gets me pumped.
W: #1s and #2s.

17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
M: We recorded our first ever demo with the lead singer of LFO in his personal studio. We never released the song but it was a pretty crazy experience recording next to a gold record on the wall.

18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio? Do you think it's a place where your band could flourish?
M: I have really enjoyed the amount of folk that has been showing up on the radio lately but I don't think it is the right place for our particular music, at least not at the moment.

19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
M: I try to keep myself busy with music as much as possible. Whether its writing, reading, teaching, or producing it doesn't matter, I'm a music junkie.
G: I dead lift women with my mustache.
K: Video games, playing music, partying / kayaking at my campground.
W: Write poetry / music and party.
R: Anything outdoors (hike, bird watch, kayak), golf, reading, and video games.

20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
M: I can build a computer from scratch and write my own script.
W:I can frame, plumb, wire and finish a house.
K: I could sell you a coat in a heatwave, a swimsuit in a blizzard, I could sell a dead crow to a bakery… I'll get that bread.
R: I worked as a chemist developing pharmaceutical drugs.
