Jay Z Ranks His Own Albums; Whacha Think?

Posted by: Jason Tate (12/05/13)
Jay Z ranked his own albums on his blog this morning. Ranking of albums? Kinda feels like an AP.net thread. Anyway, his annotated list is below ... agree? Disagree? He definitely got Kingdom Come right.

1. Reasonable Doubt (Classic)
2. The Blueprint (Classic)
3. The Black Album (Classic)
4. Vol. 2 (Classic)
5. American Gangster (4 1/2, cohesive)
6. Magna Carta (Fuckwit, Tom Ford, Oceans, Beach, On the Run, Grail)
7. Vol. 1 (Sunshine kills this album... fuck... Streets, Where I'm from, You Must Love Me...)
8. BP3 (Sorry critics, it's good. Empire (Gave Frank a run for his money))
9. Dynasty (Intro alone...)
10. Vol. 3 (Pimp C verse alone... oh, So Ghetto)
11. BP2 (Too many songs. Fucking Guru and Hip Hop, ha)
12. Kingdom Come (First game back, don't shoot me)

American Gangster is too good to be under Volume 2, and imo Kingdom Come is better than BP2, Dynasty, and maybe Vol. 3.

Personally, I think it's pretty cool to see how artists retrospectively feel about their past work.

The Black Album is probably my favorite, so it should be top three.

I think this is pretty spot on. This guy's body of work is basically untouchable. Top 5 rapper ever hands down

Definitely feel this is accurate, although I might actually switch Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint.

I would rank the Dynasty much higher. I really love that album, and it has so much nostalgic value for me. His top 5 for me in no specific order would be:

The Black Album
The Blueprint
Dynasty
Reasonable Doubt
Volume 2

top 4 is spot on, then we get iffy from there, but nothing too out of place. Vol 1 is better than American Gangster for sure though.

So he's basically saying he will never be as good as he was?

I'd love to see Kanye rank his albums. On second thought, wouldn't he just write "classic" next to all of his? I agree with most of this list though. Would put The Blueprint as #1 but you can make a case for the top 3 being #1.

Idk about that since he does have Magna Carta at #6 (top half of the list).

The top three are universally considered classics. It's not really an opinion in this case.
