Aerolyn - 12.04.13

Interviewed by
Aerolyn - 12.04.13The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:

1. How did you get your band name?
There’s actually not much of a great story behind it. Chris was looking up names for a child and came across “Aerolyn”; which means “with hope” and “with music”..both definitions inherently fit what this band is about, so it stuck, and we began to write music that would fit the very definition of “Aerolyn”…music that creates hope.

2. How did this band get started?
Long story short, Aerolyn was formed around a base group of two guys, Chris and Chase who were the ones responsible for Resilience. Once they got home from tracking that EP, they began looking for three more guys to fill the lineup on guitar, bass, and drums. Pretty soon they had Jerry Robinson on guitar and Jeremy Brookover on bass and eventually my self (Michael) on Drums. Through a series of events outside of the control of the rest of the band, the lineup went down to Chris and I who then with the help of Jeremy found Chandler, Dallas, and then Matt and rounded out our current lineup leaving us with the guys we have now.

3. What bands are you influenced by?
We all really listen to and are influenced by different bands. Anything from Mayday Parade to Underoath, from American Football and Circa Survive, to Saosin and As Cities Burn. The list could really go on and on but those are the things that stick out to me.

4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Personally, I would have to say the original lineup of Saosin. The amount of influence that band has had on me not just as a drummer but as a musician is really too huge to put into words.

5. Best food to eat on tour?
WHATABURGER! At least when we are in the south. Aside from that, we would probably go with good ol' cheap Taco Bell any day.

6. Why should people listen to your band?
We strive to make music in a way that allows everyone to understand the passion that we put into the music that we make and the resilience that we have had keeping this band together and improving our sound into what it is now. We feel that all the emotions that go into our songs are things that people can identify with and relate to within their own lives.

7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?
Wayne Gretzky; not because I love hockey, but because we want our music to be relative, but timeless in the same way the he was.

8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
Our parents, band mates, anyone who had bought or listened to our album and stuck around for the time between albums as well as the entire production team behind “Revive,” (Paul, Geoff, and everyone at Focus) along with Whataburger and Taco Bell for feeding us when we were on the road, and finally the city of Baltimore for being so incredible to us while we were there.

9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
That’s a very sensitive question…every musician/band thinks that they have the answer to changing things; we aren’t going to say that we are against changing anything, but we want to stay true to what we’ve been doing since day one. If that changes the industry..great. If not..we can only hope that we’ve done enough to make a name for ourselves within the industry that we’ve grown up wanting to be a part of. OR we could ask for $1,000 per youtube view.

10. Memorable tour experience?
For me it would be our entire recording experience with Paul Leavitt in Baltimore. We were there when they (The Baltimore Ravens) won the playoffs and I remember hearing the crowds of people going crazy in the streets and going down there and I just kind of fell in love with that city in those two weeks. Beautiful place, awesome people, and good beer. Also, the “street workers” in Baltimore are gorgeous and find a way to blend in. We never took advantage of that, but we’d be lying if we didn’t admit to realizing our surroundings.

11. What does AP.net mean to you?
AP has been one of those groups that we’ve all dreamt of working with. It has been a constant goal of all of ours to be featured on the front page of any website, especially AP. But to have our music recognized and respected by a collective of musicians and people that dedicate their lives to putting good music into the ears of fans is definitely a true dream come true.

12. What is your favorite song to play?
For me, it would have to be our new track "Hands> Words." The drums are entirely too much fun for that track.

13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
Anywhere with mountains and hiking/ skiing. So probably somewhere up in Colorado!

14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Older country or Phil Collins. My mom used to listen to that guy every hour of every day.

15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
I would like to fly. I feel like it would be super freeing - plus I would save a ton on gas.

16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
I'll usually stretch and warm up on my drum pad for a good 45 minutes before each show. You can never be too warmed up to play!

17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
I grew up in orchestra. I actually played upright bass for 6 years with one of the top orchestras in the state. I also pick wildflowers on the side of our state highways during the summer months. You can choose to believe that or not..up to you.

18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio?
Honestly…I don’t really care. I haven’t paid attention to Ke$ha, One Direction, or any other radio friendly music in a while, and I don’t think our fans have either. Everyone I know and their mom is listening to music from their iPhone that they’ve already purchased. As much as I love the foundation that radio has provided for bands like us to exist, we don’t really see a need to push our music onto the airwaves that are paid for by a few large corporations that used to shove Nickelback down your throats 10 years ago.

19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
All I really do with my spare time is work both at my day job and on this band and my drumming. Aside from that I go to the gym and play a bunch of video games.

20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
Fair warning to all our fans…if you have any original GameBoy games, bring them to our shows and we will gladly beat you. Also, Dallas has been hiding his love of break dancing for quite some time. He actually tried out for the original MTV Spring Break but was told by Carmen Electra that he was too sexy for TV.
