The producers have stated that they are big fans of "The Watchmen", as am I. Obviously I don't think that Lost has anything to do with "The Watchmen", but it made me think of something. I believe, on some level, that Jacob can be compared to the character Dr Manhattan from "The Watchmen". "The incident" in the Lost world might be revealed to be something sort of similar to the scene in the Watchmen when Dr Manhattan is caught in the chamber during the nuclear physics experiment.
I dont know if this has been confirmed or not but I think that "The Incident" is when a group of people, probably Dharma, were drilling or testing the island for it electromagnetic properties. This resulted in a massive leak of electromagnetism (The Swan was built as a dam of sorts to control the leak). I believe that during this incident someone was greatly affected by the electromagnetism. Jacob could be a Dharma member named "Jacob", or he could be Gerald Degroot, or possibly someone else that is not Dharma. I think that this person was caught directly in the electromagnetism, just as Dr Manhatten was caught in the nuclear physics test chamber. He could have just been unfortunate. He also could have intentionally put his body on the line to "plug the dam" and save many lives, hence him being a "Great man". Anyways, the resulting Jacob would be someone with extrodinary powers, but hopelessly lost in space and time. He (like Dr Manhatten) can see the future but cannot change it. He would have great powers that could heal cancer, etc...
Jacob could even be someone like John Locke, when the island moves back in time it might be at the time of the incident, he may be caught in the electromagnetism. Thats why he's "the one". Jacob could just be a code name so Locke doesn't know.
I dont want to go on and on, you get the point. But I think this would explain pretty much everything about Jacob, and also other things about Lost. It could be the reason for Lost, they may have to go to the time of the incident and stop it from ever happening. |
I like it, but I don't like it. If Jacob is someone from dharmas time, I think something like this is pretty interesting, it with some tweaking, could amount to something. I just feel like Jacob has to be someone from the beginning of the island though, someone who has always been there from the start or something though.

I never thought of this before, but Lostpedia (and this picture) hint that perhaps it's an off-island manifestation of the smoke monster. I doubt it, though...probably just that blurry look you get in any freeze frame of a fast-moving object...but very interesting.

Never thought about it being the smoke monster, but after Michaels escapades post-island and jacks, we know the island can keep you alive, makes sense that it could kill you too. That scene has one of my favorite eastereggs, with the apollo ad on the bus.

At the very end of season 2 when the arctic guys call Penny and tell her they think they found something. When she picks up her phone, you can clearly see that same photo in a frame right near the phone. Also, when the parachutist lands later in season 3, doesn't she have that picture as well in her copy of Catch-22? Only one photo was taken that day... |
yeah very odd. another thing thats odd, the original photo they show desmond with originally has another actress, which isn't too much of a problem because they probably didn't have waiger casted, but in that first photo she is wearing a white shirt and in the others she is wearing a black shirt.
