A Girl A Gun A Ghost - Through the Eyes of Ahab
Record Label: Ferret Records
Release Date: March 18, 2008
Who?
A Girl A Gun A Ghost are a post-hardcore/metalcore band from Georgia.
How is it?
AGAGAG do not sound the same as every band in the scene looking to be "oh so brutal." The vocals are strange, hanging somewhere between speaking and screaming. They could be a turn-off to some, especially when they are constantly used in the way they are. There are almost no clean vocals on this album, but when they do pop up, they sound pretty good. The clean vocals are definitely something the band should try to utilize more often, because they add to the songs instead of making every song sound exactly the same. That's the trouble with this album: everything sounds to similar. The musicianship on Through the Eyes of Ahab is pretty well done. The guitarists don't bring anything no to the table, but there is some quality work here. They don't stick to the same thing the whole time, and when they change it up, it sounds good. The lyrics aren't anything to shout about, but they are by no means bad. The "animal" theme is evident, as almost every song title has an animal name in it. AGAGAG has an interesting "style" of post-hardcore. It sounds like there is definitely some punk influence in their music. Of course, the music they make isn't all that different from all of the other bands in the genre, but it's also not entirely the same. A Girl A Gun A Ghost may seem to slip through the cracks, but they definitely have the potential to become a really good band.
Why would you recommend those bands? They sound nothing like AGAGAG.
I've had this album for a year now, and some of the songs still stay in heavy rotation for me( Pangolin Dreams, ...Of The Alaskan King, The Fox Is Restless). I still like some of the tracks off of their first EP better(Lies Pour Our, A Distant Brother). Hopefully they have more of what I like on their next album.
I bought this first day as well, but sold it soon after, just couldn't get into it, and the bands you suggested sound nothing like this...not too great of a review, try paragraphs...
This album was pretty good. The Save This City EP was great.
AGAGAG's vocals were always the best part IMO. Unfortunately AGAGAG kicked out their vocalist and put their drummer on vocals, changed their style and now sound incredibly generic. It's just baaaad.
