| Bullet For My Valentine - 10.09.06 | First off, can you please state your name and what you do in the band for our readers?
Hi, my name is Matt and I play guitar and sing for Bullet for my Valentine.
Let's kick it off with the beginning of your careers. You guys grew upon metal, but when Matt, Padge, and Michael performed as Jeff Killed John you guys played a nu-metal style. What bands from that genre can
you cite as influences?
We weren’t influenced by anybody in particular it was just that we wanted to make music that people wanted to hear at that time.
I've heard about how you came up with the name Bullet for my Valentine, but where did Jeff Kill John stem from?
It was such a long time ago, I honestly don’t remember... it was 10 years ago.
You've performed alongside some of your favorite acts such as Iron Maiden, and Metallica. What was that like?
It was fucking awesome!
You've opened for Guns N' Roses in both the United States and Europe. What kind of experience was that? How did it differ in the America and back in your territory?
Overall, it was a very good experience. The crowds were tougher than what we’re used to, but that’s understandable. It was a good learning curve for us to try to win over the crowd.
You're preparing to embark on a lengthy U.S. tour. What expectations doyou have? You put on a lively, exciting show. What can we look forward to seeing this time around?
For us it’s just business as usual…we’re gonna go out there and give 110%...hopefully we can make new fans.
You worked hard to get where you are obviously, but it seems as if your ascension came extremely rapidly once it began. What do you think it is in particular about your music that so effectively launched your group to the forefront of its genre in such a relatively short amount of time?
Mixing aggressive music with hooky, melodic vocals, and being the real deal live...
Your big breaks started to come before you'd even put out a full-length. One such break was the opportunity to play the Download festival on the main stage, which you turned down for the Snickers stage instead. Was
that overwhelming? What kind of experiences did that bring?
Yes it was overwhelming…that was the point where we realized we were making an impact with the public. It was a very special day! We just didn’t think we deserved to be on the mainstage at that point… I think we made the right decision.
What was your motivation for removing some screaming from the chorus of your single "Tears Don't Fall?"
From the band’s perspective, there wasn’t a reason…it was all politics in the world of radio play – it’s quite standard in our genre.
That won for the Kerrang! Award for "Best UK Single." You were also up for "Best Live Band," "Best Album," and "Best British Band." This followed being named their "Best British Newcomer" in 2005. How did that feel? Did you ever think you'd be taking home such prestigious awards?
Not really, but it’s always a pleasure…
You told Hardcore Sounds in an interview earlier this year that you'd been spinning a good deal of Coldplay recently. What new acts have sprung up that excite you? Are there any bands like those guys that
would seem to clash with your typical Iron Maiden and other metal albums?
There’s a bit of 2LiveCrew at the moment. It’s always nice to get away from metal every once in a while…
Wikipedia has you listed as "drinking buddies" with Aiden. What's your relationship with the guys like?
Very good…we took them on tour a couple times in Europe. We love those dudes!
Welsh juggernauts Funeral for a Friend and the lostprophets experienced success in the United States preceding your recent emergence there. Is there anyone you see as a potential next crew to follow your lead?
At the moment, no, I can’t think of anyone.
Thanks for your time guys and good luck on your tour!
Thanks very much! |

01:56 PM on 10/09/06 | Yea... it had to be an e-mail interview so there wasn't much chance for an interaction between us. At least this one came back. I sent off questions to Brandtson and I'm still waiting to hear back from them. That was a few months ago. | | |
