Young Jeezy - The Inspiration

Reviewed by: Greg Dona (12/24/06)
Young Jeezy found himself a comfortable niche in the hip-hop world quite some time ago. He started rhyming about slanging as Lil’ J on 2001’s Thuggin’ Under the Influence and never let up. He embraces his nickname “the Snowman” and his related tees and hoodies fly off shelves into the closets of his extensive fan base. This reputation obviously stems from his occupation as a cocaine dealer, and such a job only begins to hint at the ample supply of street credibility Jeezy calls upon in his lyrics. From his affiliation with the Crips to his arrests, Jay Jenkins clearly never needs to fake it.

Jeezy subscribes to the common philosophy “don’t fix what ain’t broke,” and he thus changes little from Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 to The Inspiration. In fact, the continuity between the two reigns so prevalent that he even considered prefacing "The Inspiration" with the phrase “Thug Motivation 102.” This means of course that Jenkins continues to adlib rather than sharply rhyme, detail his trap habits instead of addressing more political issues, and generally ignore conventional flows to favor his unique and somewhat awkward style. This tendency to shun typical timing makes Jay’s sound an acquired taste. His teamwork with producers from both his current and last album contributes even more commonalities to the equation; Shawty Redd, Mr. Collipark, and Drumma Boy all bring familiar beats which keep early fans comfortable with the new, relatively unchanged Jeezy. The Snowman again brings some of the most identifiable and memorable beats complimented by his raspy vocal approach to finalize multiple addictive tracks.

He keeps the same pace lyrically as well. Jeezy still spits cheap lines about coke and the trap star life. He wholeheartedly accepted his role as a musician bound to eternally write about drugs when he adopted the aforementioned Snowman persona. The irate, glaring cartoon symbolizes Jay universally. And undoubtedly Jenkins’s fans cherish his token chants of “chee-ah,” “hey,” “ha ha,” “yeah,” and other such phrases as much now as ever. Once again, these interjections help make the Snowman’s style an acquired taste.

However, the most noticeable connection comes not from a link with Jeezy’s earlier work, but rather with that of fellow Atlanta rapper T.I. DJ Toomp crafted a remarkably simplistic yet infectious synth heavy beat for arguably the best single of the year, “What You Know.” Toomp molds another synthetic, equally moving track for Jenkins, and “I Luv It” proves on par with the work of the younger artist. Even contributing producers tend toward the familiar Southern style. Whereas Mr. Collipark slows things down on “What You Talkin’ ‘Bout” to great success, not all endeavors of adapting musicians turn out so well.

Timbaland, arguably the hottest beat maker in the game, fails to mesh his upbeat pop flair perfectly with the style of Jenkins. While “3 A.M.,” which boasts the ever-familiar breathy background work of Tim, provides a catchy tune to pound, it pales in comparison to the earlier 2006 efforts of the juggernaut. The worst song on the album leads into the Tim letdown. R. Kelly and Jeezy never manage to hit a common stride as their respective flows clash horrifically on “Go Getta.” This results in one of the very few sub par tracks on the record.

Young Jeezy produces yet another banging album chock full of hit singles with his The Inspiration. He persists, tossing adlibs left and right regarding drugs and street life. Now though he manages to subsist on album sales and show profits as opposed to snow. With his acquired dough Jeezy opened his spacious home to Katrina victims and started and sponsored an essay scholarship contest for Atlanta’s teens. He thus became the title of his album: an inspiration.

Good review, but this didn't have anywhere near the magic of 101. I guess his whole schtick is only engaging for one album. Not bad though.

please stop reviewing this garbage. I know ap is trying to keep an open mind about music and thats awesome... but this is not hip hop... this is rap... over produced, generic, mainstream, no talent bullshit. I'm not saying that you should try to go out of your way to find something underground next best thing... whatever... but this is far cry from anything this site is based on. Young Jeezy? Are you serious?

[Verse 2: Young Jeezy]
The flow's so cold (yup) and I'm so cool (whoa)
Let a ***** try, I'mma act a damn fool (ay)
Got that welfare, we call it old school
Then we mix it all up, call it Pro Tools (haha)
Serve em demo tracks (tracks) let em demo that (yeah)
All these bitches in the club, where the bad ones at? (huh)
She got a mean walk (walk) I got a big stick (yeah)
I see ya muggin homie, I got a full clip (yeeeeeeah)
See I master that, and then I mastered this
Then I bring it all back, I gotta master wrist
I was on dro (dro) and she was on Hen (Hen)
She was on her, and I was zonin (let's get it)

Lyrics like that got this album an 8 for lyrical content? Give me a fucking break. This is a joke. I would rather have ap stick to its roots than have to see shit like this pop up on the news bulliton every couple weeks. So many other deserving hip hop artists out there... stick to true hip hop or dont even go there because this is complete garbage...

In rap, lyricsd are generally noted for their ability to rhyme and weave a story, not on a message sent. It's more about being clever than deep.

yeah, this cd is complete shit. I'm all for rap, but rap that is actually good, not this mainstream pile of shit that just makes naive black kids wanna do coke. there is so much better music out there, why would you wanna waste your life listening to shitty lyrics over mediocre electronic beats?
