Valley Arena, The - Take Comfort In Strangers

The Valley Arena - Take Comfort In Strangers
Record Label: Astro Magnetics
Release Date: March 29, 2005

Who:

Long Beach, California based The Valley Arena are constantly slapped with “post” labels such as “post-punk” or “post-hardcore”, leading singer/guitarist Warren Woodward to believe they are “the poster boys of ‘post’”. Considering the amount of textures and styles blended on Take Comfort In Strangers, this is tag seems like an accurate description.

How is it?

Blending the sounds of Dischord favorites Fugazi and Q and Not U with the art-punk leanings of bands like The Fall and Wire, Take Comfort In Strangers is sure to be a hit with the indie crowd. The album starts with a bang, laden with the angular guitar work and off-kilter melodic sensibility executed with perfection on the band’s single, “Paint It Red”. Certain songs on the album tend to drag, seemingly blending in with the other tracks, but the angular leanings of “Paint It Red” and the surprisingly catchy nature of “Piano Wire” stand out of the pack and keep the album interesting. The Valley Arena is not concerned with writing tunes that will land them on magazine covers across the nation, the only thing that matters to them is the creative process and the feeling they get playing their songs every night. This album may be over a year old, but it is an album worth discovering because this band exhibits the potential to make great records in the future.

Notable Tracks: "Paint It Red", "Piano Wire", and "Into The Lion's Mouth".
