Oh, God bless Witches With Dicks. If it’s not their crude band name that will get them attention…well, it’ll be their band name that will get them attention. A far-cry from anything your parents would approve of; Witches With Dicks is everything you’d expect from a band with such a moniker: balls to the wall street punk out of a city that brings up the best. However, their name is not compensating for anything – as I originally thought. This is reckless and rude punk done right.
Manual may only be twenty minutes long, quite a short record being that it houses ten tracks, but Witches cram enough flurry within the album to please even the most contemporary and/or casual punks. Album highlights like “How to Cook 40 Humans” and “Your Job Does Not Rock Balls” are lyrical vents releasing frustration towards being a 9-5’er and “those kids who lucked out, never been thrown outside and shit on”. Not only do these four guys stick with the riotous lyrical denunciations MacKaye arguably popularized so many years ago, but each song’s brevity is refreshingly retrospective. There are many points where a song’ll end and you’ll be like, “What? That’s it?” But, if you give it a second listen, it’s easy to see it wouldn’t work any other way.
Obviously with any street punk release, there’ll be those moments where you swear you’d heard a chorus or bridge before – and its no different here. All four of the members sing at some point in the album, which boosts the albums force to an undeniable edge. Angry slurs are racing back and forth creating quite a sidewinder of spit and grime almost leaping out of the stereo. Even with all of these new perks, one can't help but wonder if this genre is nearly tapped out.
Witches’ anger seems like a great creative outlet, considering they’ve plugged in to relatively great sound. Greasy and grotesque with just enough spit-shine to bring it all together – Manual is quite the punk album. Now if only more people would recognize something beyond the band’s name, then they’d be getting somewhere.

Great album, great band. They played at my radio station's festival this weekend, and as far as I know, the bassist left his bass in our studio.

I hear they sound like Dillinger Four, which intrigues me.
