Woodworkings - we sit on floors we stand on chairs
Record Label: Future Recordings
Release Date: June 1, 2010

Who?

Woodworkings is an ambient project plugging gentle, wafting music from its Baltimore, Maryland headquarters. It’s more adventurous and motley than its sonic sibling Oriin when it comes to the little details, but is much more shy overall.

How is it?

As you’ve probably come to expect from Future Recordings releases by now, we sit on floors we stand on chairs is a top notch ambient offering. All the familiar things you’d expect are present: the rich violins, the eerie and lethargic sirens, the crawling melodies – all set over a buzz that sounds like a congregation of heavenly vuvuzelas. Unlike Oriin, however, there are no post-rock catharses, only consistent and peaceful landscapes. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, since Woodworkings manages to highlight the subtleties instead. On “Connected Through Lines,” there’s a coffee shop acoustic guitar that’s strummed with a summer sunset in mind, whereas “Former Daughters of the American Revolution” stars an artsy, wandering piano line. “Sinking or Swimming” even goes as far as to run beach noises – complete with seagulls and the sound of the ocean ebbing and flowing. It might be the most serene track, but the ghostly whispers towards the end make it the creepiest one too. It just goes to show how adept Woodworkings is at its game – it can convey some of the darkest of emotions without once having to reach for lyrics. That’s always impressive.

Recommended If You LikeOriin, Hammock, ambient for summer days

This was a nice little surprise. I'll think I'll enjoy this album whilst listening to it in bed actually.

And I agree with you on the album title.
