After the demise of tech punk act Choke, Clay Shea and Shawn Moncreiff didn’t abandon their musical aspirations altogether. Along with Ryan Podlubny, previously from the Fullblast, and Allan Harding, a drummer from various underground Canadian acts, they formed Passenger Action in 2006. Choke fans will likely be pleased to know the technical riffs and weird time signatures still remain, however, making Passenger Action anything but a huge departure from their previous work.

“Tonight We Resonate” kicks off the record and perfectly shows what to expect from the other eleven tunes. This track starts off with a few sparse guitar notes before the thrashing drums and backbone bass lines quickly move in. The lyrics aren’t cheesy, which is a relief, but the themes are a little repetitive. The guitars alternate between intricate riffs and crunchy, distorted chords and are probably the highlight of the record. There is no doubt these guys can play their instruments well. The record even has two instrumental tracks, “(Night Frisbee)” and “(Good Ones are Hard to Come By)” which are very precise and even beautiful.

There is apparently a hint of pop in these songs but it never seems to appear. None of the songs get stuck in your head and you won’t be humming along to any of the melodies. Some aspects of this record may even faintly remind you of a Moneen tune as well, especially in terms of how the vocals are sung. To add to the comparison, Greg Dawson, who also worked with Moneen, recorded this with Passenger Action. However, Passenger Action come up short compared to their peers.

Repeat these descriptions for the rest of the songs; it plays like one big tune that is way too long. While these guys are a talented group of musicians, they lack the charisma other bands have that truly brings songs to life, meaning you won't be in a rush to listen to this particular disc after first listen.
