We already brought you the first volume of Song For Cities by The Gay Blades, but now we have the second installment. Get the four new songs here. Be sure to head to the replies for the story behind each as well.
Mission Murder Mystery (San Francsico)
I was born outside of San Francisco in a place called Walnut Creek. I'm sure there is some part of my lizard brain that can remember being in northern California as a child, which would explain my affinity for the anterior side of that west coast beauty. When I started humming the words to this progression (which I love!), I started talking about a ghost in the mission. Who am I to damn up the unconscious flow. So here you go SF, sorry about the Golden Gate reference, but I think it works.
The Casbah's on Fire (San Diego)
So as many of you home recording pioneers know, there is nothing more enticing and ultimately intimidating than a digital programmable drum machine. I have neither the patience, nor the soul to really get much from them. And so, this is what happens when a late 20 something comes to face to face with the urge to go digital. You guys remember the San Diego fires right??!?! Is anyone seeing a theme throughout these tunes - totally unplanned???
Fall To My Knees (Los Angeles)
This is my favorite song from the songs for cities series thus far. I recorded all of these tunes in the van during long drives, but this one actually came out pretty good sounding. You can almost totally forget the sound of 75 miles an hour worth of air assaulting my portable iso booth. This is a song about all those kids who moved out to LA to try and seduce her and take from her, her charms.
A Phoenix Rising (Pheonix)
Phoenix was the first place outside of NY/NJ that supported The Gay Blades. If you are one of those people who saw us at a campfire 3 years ago; thank you. You have made our lives richer and more fullfilled. Also, song sounds like the desert to me, doesn't it?!?!? Which is what I was going for - so...I guess I win. I've never written a song that sounds anything REMOTELY like this, so I guess this is the fun of this ridiculous project.
Tune in next week for another group of songs recorded in a van barrelling across America.
