We're Not Afraid - Adventures In Poverty

We're Not Afraid - Adventures In Poverty
Record Label: World Records
Release Date: February 8, 2011

Who?

We’re Not Afraid are a Hollywood punk band built like Strung Out without as much metal flavor. Adventures In Poverty is their debut full-length.

How is it?

For those with A.D.D., you’re in luck. Adventures In Poverty can be summarized in three syllables: “Energy” (everyone else read on). On paper, We’re Not Afraid aren’t your typical local band, considering they’re more renown in Japan than they are here in the States, which seems to be the case with several World Records acts. But sonically, Adventures In Poverty wouldn’t necessarily seem out of place as a, say, Fat Wreck Chords release. Here’s a disclaimer though: They’re more concerned with adrenaline-driven melodies than much of Fat Wreck’s active roster. “Closed Eye Drive” is easily an early runner-up for most massive chorus of the year, although you could say that about at least two or three other songs on the album. The production is voluminous and appropriate for this brand of punk, and the songs tower in a way that makes you wonder whether the band can sound this good live.

Really the only way the band makes a bid to separate itself from its peers is the colossal eight-and-a-half minute closer “Do Tell,” which runs a standard pop-punk number for the first five minutes, fades out, and then returns with arpeggios that blossom into a beautiful, final rock-out. It’s really two tracks – a conclusion and an instrumental encore – but it’s still a nice deviation from the status quo. Otherwise, Adventures In Poverty sticks closely to its influences (“Casual Ties’” guitar work is very reminiscent of Strung Out’s Agents of the Underground, for example), but it turns out for the benefit of the listener. We’re Not Afraid are clearly at home in this niche of punk – you can tell by the way their songs sweep you up in furious energy.

Thanks man, must be too late for me to function cause I looked for it and couldn't find it. If the album is as good as those songs, definitely picking this up.
