Will Hoge - Number Seven

Reviewed by: Gregory Robson (09/29/11)
Will Hoge - Number Seven
Record Label: Rykodisc
Release Date: Sept. 27, 2011

At this point in his career Will Hoge doesn't really need to make any more albums to prove his worth or demand attention. To this date, every album in his discography has been widely praised by critics and each successive release has been more commercially successful than the other. Life got even better for Hoge when the upstart country group Eli Young Band recorded his "Even If It Breaks Your Heart," and landed the song on the country charts.

But Hoge is never one to let complacency slide into the driver's seat and so it is that he has released his seventh title, aptly titled Number Seven. Being that his last few albums have cemented his reputation as writing crisp, heartfelt roots-rock a la Petty and Springsteen, Hoge allows Number Seven a few creative allowances. Sure, there's the trademark Hoge sound, namely album opener, "Fool's Gonna Fly," the slowly rising "Gone," and the jangly "Nothing to Lose," but even a Hoge diehard would admit another album of 12 songs cut from the same cloth would probably be a bit derivative.

So, the Nashville troubadour did what any veteran songwriter would do. He took a few chances. And boy did it pay off. Case in point is the spoken word narrative, "American Dream" the sociopolitical "The Illegal Line" and the gospel-tinged throwback "When I Get My Wings." Of the remaining five tracks, the best of the rest is the alt-country leaning "Goddamn California," a road-weary ballad that evokes CSNY, the Byrds and the Band.

To be fair, Number Seven is not Hoge's best work, and is not by any stretch career-defining. That being written, it's still a strong album and leaps and bounds above his contemporaries. That and that alone is why Number Seven will still pull in the die-hards and even snag a few newbies. Ever-consistent, always engaging and undeniably relentless, Hoge is and always will be a compelling crooner. Just ask the Eli Young Band.

Track Listing 1. Fool's Gonna Fly
2. Too Old to Die Young
3. Goddamn California
4. American Dream
5. Gone
6. The Illegal Line
7. Silver Chain
8. Nothing To Lose
9. No Man's Land
10. Trying To Be a Man
11. When I Get My Wings

I love Will Hoge. Nick from Over It told me to listen to him years and years and years ago when Blackbird on a Lonely Wire was released. Haven't listened to his last couple albums - it sounds like I need to give this one a spin.

Thanks Gregory - Solid review!

...listening to the first song right now - for some reason it reminds me of Shawn Mullins ("Lullaby")

I really haven't liked anything as much as Blackbird, but Draw The Curtains is good as well. Not really into this one or the last one.

Spot on review! American Dream, Illegal Line, Goddam California, and When I get my wings are my faves. Been rocking to Will Hoge since Blackbird was getting major air play down in Charleston.

Quite the contrast to my other favorite new album, The Spade from Butch Waller. Can't stop listening. Both Butch and Will are coming to new york soon! plus Locksley is opening for Will! it's going to be a good fall. :)

now Butch and Will on the same headline.....that would be the tour of the century!

I'd score it a bit higher, but it's good to see this reviewed here. I got into him after you reviewed the last one (and on a rec from my brother) and he's become one of my favorites since then. Draw the Curtains will probably always be his best, for me, but this is another great release.
