| Hint: Have a band you'd like to see interviewed? Tell us. | | Mouthful of Birds - 01.07.09 | The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:
Mouthful of Birds
1. How did you get your band name?
Mouthful of Birds. It’s from a play about some butcher that’s supposed to slaughter a pig but ends up falling in love with it.
2. How did this band get started?
Around 2006 my guitarist and current bassist new each other and some other people interested in starting a band. The lineup is pretty different now; we’ve had probably two or three lineup changes. Since we changed our name to Mouthful of Birds, I’m the only change that’s occurred, seeing as I took over for the old vocalist in the fall of 2007.
3. What bands are you influenced by?
As a whole, we’re influenced by a variety of bands such as Converge, Mastodon, Between The Buried And Me, Misery Signals, The Number Twelve, etc. (There’s a section in our myspace that lists a lot of bands.)
As for myself, I share the love for Misery Signals and BTBAM. I also love vocalists that just sound like they’re completely in your face, such as Architects or Comeback Kid. The Red Chord and Thursday also do a lot for me. Mae and Sigur Ros are two of my favorite bands and they add a lot to my writing, oddly enough. I don’t know, a lot of music influences me.
4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would it be and why?
I can’t answer for them, because most of us have really different tastes in music. But I’ll answer for myself.
Misery Signals, BTBAM, The Acacia Strain (they’re just too fun), Burst, The Ocean, Architects… I can’t think of any others.
Or else our best friends, because what could be more fun than that?
5. If you were a furry, what animal would you be? Why that animal?
A bird. Think about it. Myself, I’d be a wolf. Just because they’re scary and you don’t know wtf’s up when one’s around.
6. Why should people listen to your band?
We’re somewhat “different” or “refreshing”, I suppose you could say. Our older EP wasn’t recorded the best, however, so I’d advise people to listen now and then wait a few months for our new EP to drop. Decider (of The Onion) wrote this about us-
"Madison's screamo scene has become a Frankenstein of fashion posturing and mall-schlock lately, putting out music that seems aimed at an audience of angry junior-prom dates. Thankfully, Mouthful Of Birds effectively and refreshingly downplays the emo influence with a riotous collision of jazz-metal riffing, indiscernible growling, and mind-fuck time changes. Borrowing equally from the reckless punk blasts of Converge and the melodic, neo-prog stomp of Misery Signals, Mouthful Of Birds are, at the very least, breaking new ground in the Madison metal scene with their non-formulaic brutality. Yeah, it's another metalcore band to add to the heap, but at least this band tries harder to break the genre's confines.”
7. If you were chosen to be in Guitar Hero/Rock Band, what song would you want in the game? How hard do you think it would be to five-star on expert?
Our newest song called “One With The Abyss”. The beginning would be pretty difficult; the rest of the song would be moderate.
8. If you won a Grammy, whom would you thank?
Jesus, of course.
9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
The way that only a few types of genres (screamo, deathcore, electronic stuff) are promoted the most and pushed down kids throats. Another thing is the way that a band can be so easily signed. Or there are instances where a band member from some huge group can branch off and create a side project that basically gets signed automatically... Pretty sad.
10. Memorable tour experience?
Camping in West Virginia with this awesome band from Texas known as Close Your Eyes. Or this time in Ohio when I played basketball with some teenagers/college kids from Columbus, most of who were really good.
11. What does AP.net mean to you?
I know my drummer and I go on here. I know my bassist and one of our guitarists don’t ever really visit here, but I’m not sure about the other guitarist.
12. What is your favorite song to play?
Mine would be “The Helpless Hand Of A Dying God” or “One With The Abyss”. The other guys like playing other songs more, such as “A Masterpiece In The Making”. We all love playing our song “Dreamer” though.
13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
I love Hawaii and Florida. I really do.
14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Childhood before I was 11-12? Stuff like Eminem, Goo Goo Dolls, Everclear, Blink-182, Third Eye Blind… The radio had some really great stuff.
When I was around 13-15? Bands like Time In Malta, Thursday (still an incredible band, even though I don’t like their new stuff as much), old A Static Lullaby, Twelve Tribes, Haste The Day, He Is Legend, The Bled… I don’t know any others. I still pop in some stuff from back then and enjoy it.
15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
Teleportation. That’s just awesome. Screw flying, you could get shot down.
16. Do you feel that your band has "made it"?
Not so much. We write what we want to write and we enjoy our music and have fun with it. However, when looking around the local scene, we don’t fit in with the metalcore/hardcore bands that we usually play with.
17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
We play better drunk. The fans that have seen us know that, however. Or, we practice as a whole once or twice a month.
18. What's your favorite holiday?
Christmas. I love winter. And presents.
19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I play sports and hangout with people. I’m a boring guy. I mean… skydiving is pretty cool too.
20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
Wow, what a great question. I guess I’m pretty cool with stuff. I’m a really good dancer. Girls love it. I wrap my tie around their necks and just get down. |
