| Hint: Have a band you'd like to see interviewed? Tell us. | Inside AP.net
| | The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:
McTwist - (Sam, vocals/guitar)
www.myspace.com/mctwistrock
1. How did you get your band name?
Mike (Bass) and I (Sam, Vocals/Guitar) were living together when the band was just starting up. We went through a phase where anything we saw or did became a band name. We'd introduce it like we were introducing ourselves on stage so we could hear how it would sound. It was pretty stupid but we loved it, and eventually after about 9 straight weeks of playing Tony Hawk, we stuck with McTwist.
2. How did this band get started?
We were all friends in middle school and high school, playing in a bunch of different bands. Mike and I were in a pop-rock band together, but after a long break from playing we decided we wanted to recruit the best additions we could find to get the sound we wanted. Kurt (Drums) and Chris (Guitar/Vocals) were pretty obvious choices for us.
3. What bands are you influenced by?
We're all influenced by different things--Green Day, Sublime, The Who, 311, Bo Diddley. We listen to everything though and try to draw on a lot of different influences. Pop music plays into my songwriting pretty heavily, but punk and pop-punk are the obvious influences.
4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would it be and why?
I think a tour with All Time Low (present), Green Day (past and present) and Kurtis Blow (past) would be amazing. First of all, it would be amazing because All Time Low seem like fun dudes, Green Day is one of our favorite bands, and Kurtis Blow is just the greatest hip-hop artist ever, so that would add a pretty sweet element to the tour. It would also be great to see the different crowds that would come out for each of us.
5. If you were a furry, what animal would you be? Why that animal?
Mike- A dog, probably a yellow lab, because they are awesome
Chris- A guinea pig, because I'm fat and lazy
Sam- A prairie dog, because they are underrated and adorable
Kurt- A cat, because I have one and would like to fight it as a cat
6. Why should people listen to your band?
Because there is something there than anybody can like. It can be hard, it has edge, but it also has a lot of elements of pop songwriting. More importantly, people should come out to the shows because we love to perform and make people dance and smile.
7. If you were chosen to be in Guitar Hero/Rock Band, what song would you want in the game? How hard do you think it would be on five-star expert?
"Don't Say You're Fine" would be fun because it is fun to play, has two pretty distinct guitar parts, and is in 6/8, so the rhythm would be a little different. It wouldn't be too hard..nothing we write is too hard.
8. If you won a grammy, who would you thank?
Our parents for coming to so many shows in sketchy locations, and the fans that spend an entire day just checking out new music at shows. AND Kanye West for not interrupting our acceptance speech.
9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
The influence of MySpace, and the relative success that can be achieved by a computer program that adds friends automatically.
10. Memorable tour experience?
In Saugerties, NY, we all passed out in our van outside the venue after the show. Mike, who has a bit of an issue sleepwalking (which is related to other tour stories), must have gone outside to go to the bathroom at some point. I was woken up by a knock on the window from the police at four in the morning. They asked me what we were doing, I explained that we were just sleeping after a show, that we were a band on tour, etc. The cop let out a huge sigh of relief, saying "I swear to God I thought there was a homocide. This guy's bare legs were sticking out of the door." Mike had left the van door wide open, and passed out with his legs hanging out of it, in plain view of everybody. The cops had backup. Backup.
11. What does AP.net mean to you?
We check it almost every day, trying to find leaks, interviews and reviews. It's useful for finding new bands and finding out about bands we love. We love it, and also find it very useful for finding other bands that are doing what we want to be doing, and finding out how they are doing it.
12. What is your favorite song to play?
Sam--Don't Say You're Fine
Chris--One Rage to Rule Them All (unreleased)
Kurt--Word-Proof Vest
Mike--Late Night, Long Day
13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
Maine. Mike and I wrote a lot of the first album there.
14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Aerosmith, The Beatles, Green Day, Motown, Bruce Springsteen.
15. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Why?
Sam--the ability to retire right away, for obvious reasons
Mike--I'd like to be lined with metal like Wolverine.
Kurt--Teleport, I could go to all the 311 concerts without driving
Chris--Invisiblity
16. Do you feel that your band has "made it"?
No. I feel like we are getting there. We are starting to tour, and our songwriting is consistently getting better. We feel like we have a long way to go both from a musical standpoint and from a fanbase standpoint, but we definitely feel like there is progress. There is enough progress to keep us excited about doing it.
17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
We are all in college around the country. We practice and tour in breaks, and write songs by sending files to and from each other throughout the school year. We also are willing to challenge any band (Foursome) to a 4-on-4 basketball game.
18. What's your favorite holiday?
Thanksgiving. Sam's Jewish, so we can't say Christmas, but I think we're all thinking it.
19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
We like to play sports, listen to music, play videogames, party, and get tan. Especially like to get tan.
20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
Sam--Chris can play anything on guitar just by hearing the first 15-30 seconds of it. Literally. We've tried it by shuffling other people's ipods and watching it's actually pretty ridiculous. Kurt is an absurdly good golfer and can hold his breath through tunnels really well. Mike has really pointy nipples, and I know every single Denzel Washington line of dialogue from "Training Day." |
