Drew Beringer

Written by: Drew Beringer (12/24/05)
Drew Beringer’s Top 30 Albums of 2005: Below are my top albums of 2005. Now some on my list may not be the most groundbreaking albums ever, but they are the ones I have loved the most this year. Enjoy!

The Best of the Best of 2005
1. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois (Asthmatic Kitty)
2. Thrice – Vheissu (Island)
3. Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon (Ferret)

29. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (Vice)
30. Fall Of Troy - Doppelganger (Equal Vision)

There it is, my best of 05. I went back and forth with Sufjan and Thrice for a few weeks, but I finally chose “Illinois” as the best album of 2005 because Sufjan is one of the best songwriters in my time and he is a great storyteller. Plus the musicianship of this album far surpasses all other albums this year. “Vheissu” is a great album too. Thrice took a big risk with this album and it worked out. I know a lot of you are disappointed with it now, but by this time next year, you will be wishing that you would have put it in your top 3 of 2005. Ultimately, I chose “Illinois” over “Vheissu” because I believe “Illinois” will be an album I listened to for the rest of my life and it’ll be an album I’ll pass down to my children and whatnot.

2004 Albums I still spin:
1. mewithoutYou - Catch For Us The Foxes
2. Say Anything - Is A Real Boy
3. Blood Brothers - Crimes

For some dumb reason, I missed out on these two albums last year, and now I realize these are my top 2 albums from 2004 and I listened to these two more this year than any other 2004 album. Crimes is still one of the best albums I’ve heard and I constantly spin it.

Best EPs of 2005
1. Explosions In The Sky - The Rescue
2. Relient K - Apathetic EP
3. Straylight Run - Prepare To Be Wrong EP
4. Jimmy Eat World – Stay On My Side Tonight EP

Explosions In The Sky is epic, amazing, and beautiful. Relient K continues to get better with every record they release.

Most Disappointing Albums of 2005
1. The Bled – Found In The Flood
2. A Static Lullaby – Faso Latido

I really believe the choice of Trombino to produce the new Bled album really hurt it and took away a lot of the Bled’s aggressiveness. And I don’t know what ASL was thinking.

Albums Your Parents Will Love
1. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
2. Copeland – In Motion
3. Coldplay – X&Y
4. Franz Ferdinand – You Could Have It So Much Better

Best Demo of 2005
The Leaked Thursday Demos
These demos are very cool and show that Thursday is going to release a hell of an album next year.

Best Producer of The Year
Machine (Armor For Sleep, Every Time I Die, Boys Night Out)

Machine produced some of my favorite albums of 2005 and really helped these bands create their best album.

Best New Bands of 2005
1. Nightmare Of You
2. Cartel
3. Circa Survive
4. Jack’s Mannequin
5. All Time Low

NOY was the surprise of the year for me. Cartel will only get bigger. Anything Anthony Green touches is great and Andrew McMahon writes his best album ever. All Time Low is going to be effin big next year.

Biggest Sellout of 2005
Gwen Stefani
Gwen makes me sick. She leaves her band No Doubt in the dust to become some hip-hop/R&B singer. Whatever happened to the alternative bitch who sang “I’m Just A Girl”? Instead, she is some diva now. Forget that, I miss the “Tragic Kingdom” Gwen, but we will never see that again. Not to mention she released one of the most annoying songs in the past 5 years.

Best Music Videos of 2005
1. A Million Ways – Ok Go
2. Image Of The Invisible – Thrice
3. Theatre- Gatsby’s American Dream
Ok Go released the funniest and most creative video of 2005. The “Sin City”- like “Theatre” is awesome as well.

Worst Music Video of 2005
1. Sugar We’re Going Down – Fall Out Boy
The whole antler boy thing really annoyed me.

Best Lyrics of 2005
1. Sufjan Stevens
2. Dustin Kensrue - Thrice
3. Keith Buckley – Every Time I Die
Sufjan’s storytelling ability is amazing and his lyrics were tops this year. Kensrue’s lyrics spiritual lyirics touched me as well. The wit, metaphors, and intensity of Keith’s lyrics keep me punching babies.

Best Vocals of 2005
1. Sufjan Stevens
2. Dustin Kensrue - Thrice
3. Nic Newsham – Gatsby’s American Dream
4. Brandon Reilly – Nightmare Of You
5. Ben Gibbard – Death Cab For Cutie

The emotion coming out of Sufjan’s voice was stunning and he hits every note perfectly.

Best Live Show
Emery
Emery plays their songs near perfect live and the energy shown through each member in the band is amazing. Plus the costumes kick ass.

Best Record Label of 2005
Equal Vision Records
Had the most solid releases out of any label this year. Released Fall Of Troy, Chiodos, Circa Survive, Coheed, Bear Vs Shark, and Armor For Sleep, all solid records.

Most Overrated Band
The Spill Canvas
I just don’t get this band, I tried and tried to like them, but they just sound like a poor man’s Dashboard.

Most Underrated Bands
Minus The Bear
Modern Life Is War
Against Me!
Gratitude
Everyone needs to own these albums. MTB is one of the best indie albums of 2005, MLIW is one of the best hardcore albums of 2005, and AM! Released one of the best punk albums of 2005. Jonah Matranga of Gratitude creating one of his best albums ever and this band was barely talked about. Sadly, they no longer exist.

Saddest Break Ups
1. Northstar
2. Name Taken
3. The Get Up Kids
4. Blink-182
5. Bear Vs Shark
We could all see that the end for blink and TGUK were coming soon, but the unexpected ends to two promising bands in Northstar and Name Taken were extremely saddening. Also, Bear Vs Shark were quickly becoming one of Equal Vision’s best bands with their steller release of “Terrorhawk”.

Best ‘Other’ Zine Website
Leakmob.com
A lot of cool and awesome people on the staff there, and it’s a great community. Gave me my start.

Band(s) Most Pimped By AP.net
1. The Spill Canvas
2. Cartel
3. Fall Out Boy
4. Acceptance
5. Over It
These bands were talked about constantly this year on AP.net. Hell, TSC had their logo on the AP logo for a bit, and who can forget the ginormous Cartel banner!

Best Band Related DVD
Hellogoodbye – OMG HGB DVD ROTFL
I laughed a lot at this DVD, one of the best of 2005.

Favorite Staff Member of AP
Everyone on staff here is someone I like, but I got to say that Caleb, Scott, and Darren are probably my favorites. I talk to them the most outside of the site. I also want to extend a great thank you to Jason for hiring me to review albums for his site.

Best AP Forum
The Sports Forum is where the best debates happen. It’s a lot of fun and definitely one of my favorite forums on this site. And of course I have mad love for my buddies in the general forum. Without your support, I wouldn’t be reviewing albums here. Being a former “regular” user, I can say that you are all the reason this site is very successful. Thanks for all your support for the site and its staffers. All of 50,000 of you are very vital to the growth and future success this site receives.

I don't know about dissapointing, but I see the break up happening. The lyrics of Deja make me think he already hated touring constantly, and another major release will only amplify that.
