Hedley - Hedley

Hedley - Hedley
Record Label: Universal/Capitol
Release Date: September 6th, 2005 (Canada), Septemeber 26th 2006 (US Release)

I have friends recommending bands to me all day, but I only actually sit up and take notice of a relative few. One such occasion: it was several years ago, when I was told about Hedley, a Pop Rock band spawned from third placing Canadian idol contestant and lead vocalist Jacob Hoggard, drummer Chris Crippin, bassist Tommy Mac and guitarist Dave Rosin.

The first single off their self-title debut is "On My Own," which gives you a strong indication of what you will be hearing off a majority of the album. The song delivers simple yet effective guitars and powerful vocals with great range. The second single, "Trip," which had me hooked from the get-go. It's a slower song, but very powerful, laced with angst ridden vocals and lyrics that, while not overly creative, certainly drive the point home. Other stand out tracks include "Saturday," which starts of with almost a marching beat and works up to its climactic chorus, where Hoggards vocals really shine.

Hoggards vocals will either leaving you craving for more with the highly emotional "Gunnin'" or leave you wondering what crap those canadians are pushing now. The overall tone and content of the album is delivered with very basic muscianship, but is delivered very well. However, it is this simple approach that draws the most criticism and causes much dissaproval for this band. Lyrically the album has the standard heartbreaks, fights and unhappiness. 'I Love you, i need you, like a thousand times before, wonder why... i hate you?' a prime example.

This is a band you will either love or hate; I personally love this band and yes this review is very biased, but it's something i love and just want to show it off to the world, much like a new car or a super hot new girlfriend.

Recommended If You LikeThe power in pop; If simple plan were a good band; songs about heartache

I dunno, FLW has four of my favourite Hedley songs (Hand Grenade, Narcissist, For the Nights I Can't Remember, Old School).
