Taking Back Sunday - Louder Now
Release Date: April 25th, 2006
Records Label: Warner Bros. Records.
Oh shit! Is Jason Tate reviewing the new Taking Back Sunday album? You know that's what everyone is thinking right now over at the record label and probably half those reading this little spectacle.
So let's get this started! Well, I'm not pulling any fucking punches, I'm not holding anything back, I'm not going to let anyone tell me what I can or can't write. Fire up those email accounts, the hate mail is sure to be flowing after this one, right?
Pause ... take a deep breathe ... the album is really good. Like, really good. It's closer to Northstar's Pollyanna then Where You Want To Be and only has a few songs I wish didn't make the cut. The lyrics are sharp and effective, the music is well timed and the production is crisp and clean (but not over done). There aren't really any strained screams or passionate vocals, but I found myself getting over it a lot faster with this release then I did with their last CD. I went into WYWTB with high-expectations and was let down, I went into Louder Now with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.
The My Chemical Romance crowd is going to make Taking Back Sunday the next big thing. This album is going to sell a million copies, and the band's going to be on the cover of every magazine you don't want to see them on. Just accept it now.
I gave up wanting another Tell All Your Friends, hoped for not another Where You Want To Be, and got something in between that ended up making me extremely happy. To be honest, the music (and over all sound and presentation) isn't anything mind-blowing. I don't get knocked on my ass like I did the first time I heard TAYF, but the catchy repetitiveness is all there.
Sound out tracks include the opener (and obligatory album name dropper), "What It Feels Like to be a Ghost," the crazy catchy "Up Against (Blackout)," the future hit single "Twenty Twenty Surgery" and "Miami." I can't stand "Error Operator" and it should have been dropped from the album. The single "MakeDamnSure" is one of the two songs I'm indifferent about (the other being "My Blue Heaven") - I like them at times, and others I quickly hit the skip button.
Sometimes it just feels better to give in.
It took 5 listens of the CD for me to reject previous notions, accept new feelings, and fall for this CD. Give it a spin, give it a listen, while they may be a future guilty pleasure (I don't see this album having much staying power with me), they sure are fun to listen to right now (over, and over, and over again).
I still feel that with each album Taking Back Sunday get farther away from what made them unique, special, and defined their sound; however, this time I've just accepted that they've become a better version of all their copy-cats.

are you nuts..?
" Sound out tracks include the opener (and obligatory album name dropper)" ... hmm. i think i can speak for all of us when the clip of "SPIN" is unreal.....to not mention that track is almost absurd..
well said...and about them blowin' up I wouldn't be suprised if they sell out hammerstein or whatever venue they play for their US tour for back to back (or even a third) nights
I think this is an album people are going to have very strong opinions about. I like the single thats out now and can't wait to hear this "not revolutionary, but cool" sound. I liked WYWTB, and of course loved TAYF, im interested in where this will fit in between those two.
