Hot Chelle Rae - 09.18.09

Interviewed by
Hot Chelle Rae - 09.18.09The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:

Hot Chelle Rae [ myspace]

1. How did you get your band name?
Oh my, well... We're all familiar with myspace. Nash was first contacted by a girl named Chelle Rae, a good 4 or 5 years ago! Just a friend, nothing major, we all had new exciting random friends due to the onset of our precious social networks that we've come to confide in so much. lol. She began speaking to us all eventually, having dedicated conversations about the music industry and her connections. Apparently she worked for Universal... She knew people we knew, knew things that we knew... and there wasn't anything too fishy about it until one day we came to the realization that we'd never actually MET her... nor anyone else that said they knew her either. She'd say "meet me here and we'll all hang" then cop out at the last moment saying she got tied up somewhere or something of the sort. Well we started snooping, getting curious... and not too long after she had started speaking to a good friend of ours and he began to wonder as well. With the help of our friend Jim, we were able to identify her as a fraud. She'd been stealing the life of a celebrity, photos, bios, and such... and using them has her own. Little did I know at the time, how often this occurs in the world of social networks. Well, we busted her and magically she disappeared. She was just a 19 year old girl from a small town, living vicariously through a life crafted from the world wide web. Tragic really... did I mention she was Hot? ;) Or so we thought... Hence the name... Hot Chelle Rae

2. How did this band get started?
RK had started a solo project a solid 5 or so years ago, basically acoustic oriented. But soon felt the need for a band thing, a mutual friend had suggested he and Nash try working together. So they did. Although completely a world apart from each other at the time, the two formed a bond that would soon be the beginning of our lives as we know it! I was living in Enniskillen, N. Ireland, looking for something new and fresh. I'd been into music for quite a while at this point, but was unsure of my direction. After six months of green mountains, overcast skies, black lochs, and an experience I will never forget, I came home. Nash and I had been long time friends already, and I was well aware of his joining into the ranks of RK and the band what was known as ********** lol... We'll just leave that out of the equation. I attended some shows, hung out as if nothing had changed and they were going through quite the bass player search. I think the number grew to somewhere around 4 or so at this point, when I saw a show where they had a hired gun and afterwards I told Nash... "if he can play bass, surely I can" haha. I learned a couple of their songs, and had a couple rehearsals and it just clicked. We started all writing together and it really felt solid. About two years later, Jamie, Rk's little brother who was destined for rock and roll drumming, knew EVERY song we had written and was effortlessly thrashing out beats to the tone of The Foo Fighters, The All American Rejects, Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, MUSE, and so many others. It was meant to be. And so we all came together, as friends to become Hot Chelle Rae :)

3. What bands are you influenced by?
I think I have the weirdest influences of the group. I like mostly chill, quiet music. lol. When we're on tour the person who is driving gets to pick the music. So when it's me, the guys are lucky because most likely they're trying to sleep, and my personal taste just about suits that to the teeth! But that's just me. I've always been into bands like Metric, Elbow, Coldplay, Radiohead, Portishead, Mum, just real out there stuff.

4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would it be and why?
Unanimously, I think the bands of choice would be......... Queen (need I say more?) , MUSE (I drool over their live shows and production not to mention the musicianship and endless sea of screaming dedicated fans), All American Rejects (I just feel like that'd be about the perfect tour for us right now).

5. If you were a furry, what animal would you be? Why that animal?
Koala... they're so freaking cute. And they just chill. I love that. haha

6. Why should people listen to your band?
Because we have made it our goal to write the best songs we can and reach people in every way possible, whether its lyrically or just from the groove. We love what we've been able to create and we want to share it with everyone. I don't doubt for a second that there is at least one song on our record that EVERYONE can relate to and dig.

7. If you were chosen to be in Guitar Hero/Rock Band, what song would you want in the game? How hard do you think it would be to five-star on expert?
Well I gotta admit, I don't know what "Five-star" is. lol. But I imagine its something along the lines of a "perfect" on expert mode? But I think "Say (Half Past 9)" would be a good one for the game!

8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
Oh dang. It'd consist of my immediate family, close friends, God, and managers. Really the list could go on for so long, I hate having to choose people.

9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
More vinyl, more videos, more purchasing, more love.

10. Memorable tour experience?
I'd have to say a good one was last November or December... We had just played in Oklahoma City and were driving to Omaha Nebraska. It was a brisk 5 o'clock in the morning and I had been driving for a couple hours. Nash was in the passenger seat... we are in the middle of NOWHERE! haha He's kind of passing in and out of sleep, but at one point we're driving along and amidst the emptiness and fog laden hills we saw a casino approaching us. We looked at each other with a knowing face laughing and said... "yeah" lol! So we made a 5am journey to the casino, it was the oddest experience ever. But a great moment none the less. $10 dollars and 20 minutes later we were back on the road. The other two guys still asleep in the back :) Oh wait, RK peed in the parking lot haha

11. What does AP.net mean to you?
I think Absolute Punk.Net is a great blend of all the different music related networking sites right now. It's loaded with content, I could literally spend hours on it just reading and watching videos and what not! I think it holds a lot of potential in becoming one of the top browsed pages in its genre!

12. What is your favorite song to play?

I really love playing "Last Ones Standing." It's the closing track on our record and it just has such an epic feel to it. It really does it for me every time.

13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
I'm gonna be terribly indecisive okay? I love L.A (the beach, the weather, the lifestyle) .... I love Colorado (for the snowboarding), and I especially love Ireland (perfect).

14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
The Beatles... for sure

15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?

I think I seriously ask myself this question every day! It's between flying or breathing underwater. There is something magical about both. But in the end I think I'd stick to flying. I have dreams about it all the time and i always wake up hella stoked. lol Its the ultimate freedom.

16. Do you feel that your band has "made it"?
Hardly. We've worked extremely hard to get where we are, yet we're still at the beginning. I don't think we'll ever "make it" if we leave it up to our standards. We will always strive to better ourselves as players, writers, and performers no matter how successful we may become.

17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?

I'm a photographer. It's a side thing, but I've always had a passion for it and I continue to pursue it whenever I get the opportunity!

18. What's your favorite holiday?
Christmas, done. I love the Christmas season, I feel like I wait all year for it! haha

19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Take photos, drink coffee, work on cars, write, go to the park, rock climb, seek solitude... that kinda stuff.

20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
I can juggle! lol umm... I can tumble too! Like, flips and stuff. Random. I guess I should have written monkey a few questions earlier... I climb almost everything... But I think I'll stick with Koalas... they're dope.
