Arma Angelus

"Looking back on the period of my life is so funny to me. I can't believe I took myself so seriously (which I say about every ten years, and will again soon I'm sure). We were kind of the younger kids in the Chicago hardcore scene I had grown up on everything from Everlast (the hxc band) to Screeching Weasel to Los Crudos. I played in a couple of different bands--Extinction, a bit in Race Traitor--but Arma Angelus was the first time we were allowed to run the show. I remember when writing "Misanthrope" I was really angry. My aunt had just passed away from a disease called Lupus which attacks the body's own immune system. I guess it was about my thought that it made more sense for companies and practices to treat people than to cure them. This was all the "well-researched" 18 year old's uneducated emotional perspective. Kind of hated how deep my screaming got on this record. Haha. The band was kind of a revolving door. Hurley played bass on the demo. Trohman went on tour with us and "7 Angels". "Hey Chris" played bass for most of it though Tim from Rise Against played bass and sang on the first record. Its funny, at the time, Fall Out Boy was Arma Angelus's side project. We had just a four track demo on cassette tapes. We kind of just joked around. At the end the last two shows, it was pretty much the guys from Fall Out Boy and Hey Chris playing bass--Patrick on drums and Joe on guitar at a show, Andy on drums at another. We stopped doing Arma after awhile not because FOB got big (we hadn't at all), but I think I got tired of screaming every night and I definitely got tired of a scene where there were a lot of people just yelling, "Mosh you f*ggots" into a microphone. Its funny, we still write Fall Out Boy songs like we wrote hardcore songs, only there is more thought put into the melodies I guess. I always look back on Arma with a fondness. Fun van tours. Got the chance to play Hellfest and even CBGBs (from which Hey Chris stole urinal cakes). We weren't very big. We lifted a lot from Damnation AD. Anyway, I'll never be bitter about it and appreciate the era. Even if I had weird bleached hair or dreadlocks. Haha."
