Sound We Sleep - Keeping Secrets
Record Label: Red Blue Records
Release Date: June 3rd, 2009
It's exceptionally rare and extremely uncommon to stumble across a band that manages to effortlessly capture and create a body of work that's as impressive as it is vibrantly energetic and youthful. Floridian five-piece pop rockers, Sound We Sleep have managed to accomplish exactly that with their debut full length, Keeping Secrets, which contains infectiously catchy choruses, well constructed verses, fantastic instrumentation and superb musicianship throughout the ten tracks provided.
"A Life Apart" is a fitting opener and gives listeners an indication of what to expect throughout the remainder of the record. Despite the at-times simple structures ever present and implemented, Sound We Sleep have the profound ability to showcase their songwriting talents in an eloquent and immersive fashion. Complete with the effectively simple, yet arguably strongest chorus Keeping Secrets has to offer, it's sure to have listeners taking notice as to the immense talent this incredibly gifted band possesses.
Without a moment's hesitation, "More to This" is the single best, finest and most memorable track Sound We Sleep have written in their short and inexperienced career thus far. Lead vocalist Dave Del Vecchio delivers a stirring vocal performance complete with relatable emotion and personality. This really helps to give the track enormously soaring momentum which only escalates and continues to build within every single second of its three and a half minute duration.
If determined to look hard enough, listeners are bound to find flaws, missteps and the occassional stumbles in even the best of records. "Renditions" is solid albeit unremarkable and lacks the band's usual drive and quality chorus. However, thereafter, there are very few things to criticize and to do so would be highly unjust and a tremendous disservice to the quality of music displayed and on offer.
Towards the latter portion of the record the band shows subtle signs of experimenting ever so slightly with their sound, none more apparent than conveying and showcasing their versatility with "Facing Myself", a slow to mid-tempo ballad that utilizes intricate strumming behind beautifully soaring, captivating vocals. The vulnerability and heart-wrenching delivery is etched into every note played and every lyric sung. It really is superb and warrants all the praise currently being heaped upon it.
Put simply, Sound We Sleep have managed to create one of the very best debuts, and criminally underrated pop/rock releases of 2009. The talent of this band is unquestionable. If you're interested in hearing more, or are just unconvinced by these words, the band have kindly made available Keeping Secrets for entire download for free via their official Purevolume page. Don't allow Sound We Sleep's Keeping Secrets to slip under your radar any longer.
In truth, this albums is excellent and it's been a while since I've been able to say that. It has a lot of power and is catchy, too. Personally, my favorite song on the album is, "In Slowing Down." I honestly think that was the most memorable song. Take a listen and judge for yourself. I didn't even know about this band until one of the members added me on twitter. He had posted something about a stickam chat and so I went and they played a few songs and did some improv. They sounded good without being digitally mastered so I gave their actual stuff a listen and they've quickly become a favorite of the moment.
Their intro's are so strong and musically pleasing to the ear. I was a little scared because often when a new band has good intros, the vocals are such a let down. But when the vocals came in, I quickly fell even more in love with the album and the band. I believe there are great and bigger things for this band in the future. Buy this album or download it if it's still free.
