Heartsounds - Until We Surrender
Record Label: Creator-Destructor Records
Release Date: August 25, 2009
Formed from the destruction of melodic death metal band Light This City, Heartsounds burst on to the punk scene with their energetic debut Until We Surrender. On Until We Surrender, Ben Murray and Laura Nichols sound like they've playing punk together for years.
How is it?
Just ask Murray, who belts out the lyrics "I found my true calling / And it sounds so fucking good" on opener "The Song Inside Me." Murray and Nichols are a hell of a duo, playing all the instruments and taking on vocal duties (Murray playing guitar, bass, and drums along with vocals, Nichols playing guitar and doing vocals), and the album is full of fast, melodic punk. Vocally, we get to hear the softer tones of Nichols, who previously did the growls for Light This City, and the gritty voice of Murray. Combined, the call-and-response, dual vocal delivery is very easy on the ears. Stand out tracks include "The Song Inside Me," "Until We Surrender," and "Slave To a Heart That Strays." "Walking Dead" takes a shot at the industry, questioning the intentions of those in charge of the labels:
"What the fuck has happened? / Everything sacred has been reduced to shit by the "heavy" hand of trend-selling pricks. / No more heroes, just human waste. / Our idols have been replaced by hideous faces of frauds who pretend to feel lost. / Disgraces of bands who buy their souls at wholesale cost and sell them back with no remorse to the walking dead whores."
Not many bands play the music they want to play anymore, but Heartsounds do, and they do so with vigor. Their lyrics don't dance around; they are straight to the point. If they can stay the course, Heartsounds may become a force to be reckoned with in the years to come.
I absolutely love this record. So glad that Epitaph picked these guys up.
Epitaph > every other label
Epitaph was the logical choice for this band. Epitaph should give them the push they need to take off. Hopefully, since they're on the same label now, they can tour with Set Your Goals. I'd love to see that show.
