That's not exactly what the article says.

I'm not saying this isn't strange, but it's not the craziest idea I've ever heard. Specifically if it's part of a performance. I mean we're talking about Rufus Wainwright here. It's not like Blink 182 asked people to not clap or cheer for them on stage, or Aerosmith making this request. It's a piano player and as the article says it's for the first set out of the two, I'm sure whatever the reasoning is... it'll make sense within the performance itself. I mean... it's not like he's John Cage going out there to perform 4'33''

The hate should go away, it is a part of the performance. The continuity of the songs from one to the other can be heard, if you would listen to the new record you would see that.
