Heavy Heavy Low Low - Hospital Bomber EP
Record Label: Twelve Gauge Records
Release Date: July 27th, 2010
If you seemed to have forgotten about this little unorthodox band, allow me to re-introduce you to Heavy Heavy Low Low. They are a four-piece mathcore band from San Jose, California. They are one of those bands that people either love or hate. If it's the latter for you, chances are you are too serious of a person because nobody should really take this band seriously at all, they are just having fun. I mean, their last album was called Turtle Nipple and The Toxic Shock after all, so that speaks for itself right there. All Heavy Heavy Low Low fans can now rejoice, as they have released a new EP entitled Hospital Bomber. Their sound is a tad different this time around as they have gotten more spastic. Every loony thing you loved about this band is still there, so it is certainly nothing to worry over.
This four-ish track EP is only four minutes and a few seconds long (an 18 second intro hardly counts as a track). It's a party though; a very short party, but a party nonetheless! ''Customary Impurity'' begins with a traditional Heavy Heavy Low Low guitar riff and Robbie Smith's rough, blood-curdling screams that only seem to get messier throughout the song, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as it works well for the band. Towards the end of the song, some spastic sounding guitar riffs come into play with some funky sounding guitar parts following it before the breakdown comes in and lays the listener to rest.
One thing that does get a bit obnoxious and tiresome about the band, is that one particular guitar riff you tend to hear in many of Heavy Heavy Low Low's songs (you'll know it when you hear it), and that makes its presence in ''Meat Hole.'' For the most part, it is an enjoyable track. It's heaviness and urgency makes up for what it lacks, especially that neat dingy sound at the very end. EP closer ''We Incompetent Sperm,'' is a suitable ending to Hospital Bomber . The way Robbie Smith talks so quickly and panicky is a nice touch to the song, giving it more flavor as it compliments the band's unorthodox style well.
All in all, Hospital Bomber is a fun little jam session. It contains the most impressive lyrics from the band yet and has a more edgy sound to it. Heavy Heavy Low Low certainly aren't about breakdowns and large rodents with wings crawling on necks. There is also the fact that when you see the EP's title, you can't help but think of the scene in The Dark Knight when Nurse Joker blows up the hospital with a bomb (seriously, how cool was that?). When it comes to Heavy Heavy Low Low, they are a band you need to take with a grain of salt. So turn up the volume, open your windows, wake up your neighbors with this EP and give them four minutes of hell!
