| Kevin Federline - Playing With Fire | It seems as if everyone in the United States, nay the world dislikes Kevin Federline. The grimy backup-dancer-turned-millionaire got hate for his luck in marrying a pop idol a few years back and now inspires it in his shady dealings with his divorce of the aforementioned icon. He grabbed center stage with his release Playing With Fire; hopefully he’ll relinquish it soon.
I nervously anticipated my first spins of this album. I knew that horrific and painful listening likely followed, but I hoped to find one of those rare gems that so sharply catches listeners off guard with their brilliance. In fact, even mediocrity would have pleased me. Unfortunately, K-Fed manages to deliver nothing past pure trash.
His debut release starts with a remarkably cheesy introduction featuring snippets from headlines regarding Federline, Ms. Spears, and various oft-ridiculed aspects of the dancer’s life. “World Is Mine” starts off with a terribly unappealing low, spacey, hollow backing. Kevin manages to make things even worse by stretching his already appalling flow past its natural abilities by trying to match the deepness of his music with his voice. Needless to say, he fails miserably. Federline somehow stumbles blindly across a workable beat for his “America’s Most Hated,” but of course his scratchy, awkward flow manages to shatter the potential. Federline sounds southern, but not in a good way. Rather than wrapping a warm, fluid spin around each line like Jeezy or T.I., Kevin simply rabbles on about his own greatness with childish impatience and abruptness. Where such cockiness comes from proves a legitimate query. K-Fed never once impresses musically throughout the course of his album. The record’s only bright spot comes in the form of Spears’s cameo on “Crazy.” Not surprisingly, Federline manages to ruin his track with his former lover alongside the other songs he demolishes during his disc’s dreadful fifty or so minutes.
Shockingly, the actual music proves the bright spot on Playing With Fire. Federline’s writing ends up infinitely more testing than his beats and flow, or lack thereof. K-Fed self calls on track after track, pausing only to take abbreviated breaths. He brags about his Ferrari, Yankees cap, and phenomenally gangster and pimp lifestyle. Once he even garners the nerve to spit “I’ve got 50 mil I can do whatever I want” as if his own talents, motivations, or successes played anything but the most minimally marginal role in obtaining such funds. Sadly but not surprisingly, he rhymes “whatever I want” with that exact phrase for his next two lines. Actually, K-Fed frequently uses the same word repeatedly instead of finding a true rhyme. His unfitting diction, which includes “Hater-ade,” exhausts the listener. This makes his ego masturbation even more intolerable.
2006 produced many shocking results in pop music. Justin Timberlake earned the fan support of frat boys and elitists everywhere, Paris Hilton put out an album decidedly more impressive and enjoyable than everyone expected, and Greg Gillis made indie snobs dance to mainstream hip-hop and pop of past and present. Kevin Federline, however, fails to shock anyone. Playing With Fire is just as bad as we all thought it would be. |

I would, but I have two reasons for not:
1) I want to review some real music next.
2) It only sold something like 343 copies in its first week. I don't think I'd even be able to find a copy of it.
If I get my hands on it somehow and I can do some reviews of actual music over my Thanksgiving break I'll definately think about reviewing it.

11:38 AM on 11/14/06 | when did punk rock become so safe? So much for unbiased reviews. Haha. I think this is bad, but there has definitely been worse records released this year. I'd put it around a 4.5 or so. 90% of the shit that people say about this record is from people that never even listened to the record.

Honest to God I think that this just might be the worst CD that I've ever heard. He's so boastful despite his inabilities that it makes me cringe. I'm sorry if this was too harsh, I can take it down if y'all want. But I really despise this album and I wanted the review to accurately reflect my feelings about it.
