I just think it's fucked up to limit choices like that to people who deserve to make their own choices AND live with those choices. It's not going to stop obesity.
The problem is we say this about everything. "10 minutes of recess doesn't stop obesity", "Soda limits don't stop obesity", "Limits on sugar and salt don't stop obesity". Individually, no. Together, as say it is is some other countries, they absolutely can.

It's not even an issue I feel that passionately about, but, there are some really simple solutions that we don't enact just because we're lazy...and because its so easy to frame it as "taking away your rights".

Quote:
And what made me more mad was the day after Bloomberg announced the soda thing, he was the grand marshal of the National Donut Day parade in New York. Donuts have more calories and fat than soda does...as do most other things.
Well, yeah, Bloomberg is definitely still a dumbass...especially to do it the same day.

Maybe it's part of being 22 and my mind will change as I get older, but I'm just sick of the government (local government is just as guilty) deciding what's best for me or what it wants me to do with my life. I'd rather the people it could affect were voting on it, because then at least we can't say we were forced to do it.

I liked this article about it: http://www.theatlanticwire.com/natio...oda-ban/52996/

Basically what I was trying to say. I'm a big soda drinker. I don't eat excessive amounts of food or overindulge in any way and I don't even eat cake. I will rarely eat donuts or cookies. I haven't eaten my own birthday cake in like 10 years, haha. But I drink a lot of soda and I've gotta deal with the consequences of it. Besides being overweight, I'm a pretty healthy person with low cholesterol and good blood pressure. I think if I want to have a large soda, I should have the option.

yeah man i'm cool with all of that. i personally try to avoid eating/drinking sugar at every cost. when i do have it, it comes in the form ketchup or a little bit of mocha into my already 90% filled iced coffee.

And wow, yeah, the Menino thing is pretty insane. I get the symbolism of Chick-Fil-A on the Freedom Trail right across from where gay marriages first happened, but it's a huge reach to extend that to all locations in the city. Pretty much handing Chick-Fil-A a win in that lawsuit

It's really a much, much deeper problem in that...but, to solve those issues, Bloomberg needs laws to go through the NY state legislature, where they'd never pass.

The basic gist was that if fast-food places followed the ban, it'd cut about 60-80 calories a day from the average diet. People, on average, eat about 250 calories too much per day. So, just by limiting soft drinks, you potentially cut 25% of that over-consumption. That doesn't count what other reasonable portion things would do.

If I was a politician who saw health-care costs sky-rocketing, and I saw a solution as simple as making sodas smaller, I'd do that shit instantly. Because thats a much simpler solution that trying to put limits on burger size, or on quality of meat, etc.

Yup. My friend managed to lose at least 50 lbs. from cutting out soda from his diet a few years ago. Plus it's cheaper if you just get water at restaurants.

Well, and to me its who the limits actually affect. Go to any sit-down place and they are handing you a small soda anyway; which they can refill as much as you want. It's only fast food places and movie theaters that this really effects, and those are places where I don't have a big deal with trying to make a little healthier.

It probably wont have a big impact, because there are plenty of loopholes in the idea, but the sentiment is good

So true. Usually when I go out with friends, I'm the only one who doesn't get a water, haha. I went on a diet last year during school, went running and worked out every day, eating a lot healthier and everything...didn't lose a lot of weight at all and I can only assume it was because I didn't fully cut soda from my diet.

Yeah, I had the same issue. My work just added a fridge with free sodas, and I can definitely tell that I feel shittier on days where I drink a bunch of soda. Damn whiskey and coke for tasting good!

i went on weight watchers 3 years ago and dropped about 20 lbs. realizing that just a can of coke was 5 points when my entire breakfast was around 7 points was pretty eye opening. once i cut that out (along with juices) i dropped the weight easily.

My dad lost about 40 lbs. on Weight Watchers and my uncle just reached the 90 lb. mark (he had a Weight Watchers support group at work weekly where they would do it as a team). I think I'm going to try it out. I don't eat like an animal to begin with, so portion control isn't my problem. It's WHAT I eat, not how much. I eat such bad shit. I'm always running to work or school or something, so I'm a big fast food eater. It's gotten really bad. I never eat healthy anymore now that I don't live on campus. In the cafeteria, it was easy to have salads and grilled chicken and stuff. Not while I'm home, though.

My friend also said that getting a full night's sleep more often helped him out, too. That probably has something to do with him staying up every night eating junk food all through high school, though.

Yeah, and the Freedom Trail thing becomes a little ironic since he's limiting freedoms in not allowing it.
