Rooftops - A Forest of Polarity
Record Label: Clickpop Records
Release Date: May 18, 2010
This review was written by an AP.net staff member.
Let's face it, instrumental music can be long-winded, laborious and incredibly exhausting. It is for these exact reasons that the math-rock instrumental quartet Rooftops is so darn refreshing. Herky-jerky opener "Fiery Atlas" is less than two-minutes long while the circular "I Fast Early," is under three. On the lazy "Raft Easily," and the "Year as Lift," the group offers two of its most inspired cuts, with the latter taking precedence, due in part to the presence of inspired horns and twinkling guitars in the song's middle half. Being that they are a math rock band, one has to expect at least one mind-bending selection that veers left and right without a moment's notice and that song is most assuredly "Tear As I Fly," a schizophrenic and swerving foray into the unexpected.

Vocals are added to the mix in the latter two minutes of "A Layer Fits," arguably one of the disc's strongest songs, while "Leafy Stair," is buttressed by a soaring crescendo, funereal horns and a cinematic flourish that is unlike any other on the album. Group vocals return on "Era Falsity," an early morning composition with gleaming guitars and one of the most gorgeous final 60 seconds of any song released this year. If there's one song to download from A Forest of Polarity, it is most assuredly "Era Falsity." The disc ends with "Sea Frailty," a 10-minute opus of crests, swells, starts and stops. If one needed any further proof that Rooftops were a force to be reckoned with, then this titanic, whirlwind tour-de-force is just the ticket.

If this is just a debut, then you can damn well trust that Rooftops is a band you'll hear more from going forward.

Editor's Note:
This is another spring release that was misplaced by yours truly, My apologies for that. Also, for all us literary geeks, the album's song titles were drafted from the following four vowels: A,E, I and O; and the following six consonants: F, L, R, S, T and Y. Not a bad concept, come to think of it.

Track Listing 1. Fiery Atlas (intro)
2. Astray Life
3. I Fast Early
4. Raft Easily
5. Year as Lift
6. Tear As I Fly
7. A Layer Fits
8. Leafy Stair
9. Era Falsity
10. Sea Frailty

Rooftops is Mark Detrick: guitar, vocals
Drew Fitchette: guitar, vocals
Jonathan McIntyre: guitar, vocals
Wendelin Wohlgemuth: drums, percussion

This band reminds me of This Town Needs Guns. I guess that's why I love this CD so much.

Glad this band is getting some attention! I love this CD.

And their titles are all anagrams, if that's the word you're looking for.
