2010: A Year in Review

Financial hardship is a common conversation point these days, and I didn't survive 2010 unscathed. Part-time retail hours, a layoff, unemployment checks, and an unhealthy heaping of disillusion were all on my mind this year. What does that have to do with my end of the year list, you ask? Well, when you're living on PB&J sandwiches, you can't really spare money for music. But my musical drought has ended (60-hour workweeks... thank God), and I made a late run to devour as much music as I could. I didn't reach my goal of thirty albums, but twenty-five isn't a bad consolation. I know I missed some albums I'll fall in love with later, and you should tell me what I still need to pick up. Of course, if there are some albums on my list you haven't listened to yet, get on it! Cheers to the new year.

01. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted FantasyIt's easy to understand why some people choose to distance themselves from Kanye West's music. The guy can be a real fool - even the American president thinks so. But Taylor Swift be damned, Kanye is on top of the world with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. With his latest album he's taken everything he's learned and fashioned a whimsical, overblown monster that easily flips between arrogance and apology. Calling back to the flashing lights of Graduation and the haters in the media ("Fuck SNL and the whole cast"), 'Ye mixes, mashes, crashes, and then invites Chris Rock to the party just for good measure. This is it, an exquisite hip-hop pop album we can love - or hate, if you can't get past the man to dine on the music - for years to come. No, I will not compare Kanye West to Picasso or Miles Davis like some other music critics have. But I will say this: Yeezy, you done took this shit to the 'nother motherfuckin' level.
