Deborah Remus

Written by: Deborah Remus (12/01/10)
So for anyone who actually cares, here's my EOTY list:

Top 30

These are my favourites, hopefully you find some stuff in here you love and some stuff you hate too:

1. The Menzingers Chamberlain Waits
So catchy, "Time Tables" is one of my favourite songs from 2010.

2. Against Me! White Crosses
Screw the haters, I love this record. Plus, I've listened to at least one song off of it every day since I got it months ago.

3. Fake Problems - Real Ghosts Caught on Tape
Amazing record, I love it even more than the one they put out last year.

4. Off With Their Heads In Desolation
Took a few spins, but the it grew on me and I like the lyrics.

5. RVIVR - LP
Awesome vocals and you can never go wrong with ex-Latterman stuff.

6. Carpenter - Sea to Sky
The best record you probably didn't listen to this year and one of the best bands in Canada right now.

7. The Flatliners - Cavalcade
Hearing this record and seeing the band live twice this year proved to me that the Flatliners have only gotten better with age.

8. Shad - TSOL
I'm not the biggest hip-hop fan, but even I love Shad.

9. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - The Brutalist Bricks
Ted Leo delivers again.

10. The Gaslight Anthem American Slang
Really good, I like this just as much as The '59 Sound.

11. The Dopamines - Expect the Worst
This record's just a lot of fun, probably my favourite pop-punk discovery of 2010.

12. Yukon Blonde Yukon Blonde
I don't know to to classify this band, but they're catchy and I like them.

13. Make Do and Mend End Measured Mile
Just really good, another reason Paper+Plastick is one of the best labels in 2010.

14. My Chemical Romance Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys
I went into this with very low expectations and they were greatly surpassed. I'm sorry I ever doubted them because MCR still have it.

15. The Thermals - Personal Life
Another solid release from The Thermals and the single is still stuck in my head.

16. Hollerado - Record in a Bag
Technically a re-release but whatever. I didn't start paying attention to Hollerado until this year and they're a good Canadian band.

17. Iron Chic - Not Like This
I'm just a sucker for bands like this.

18. Rumspringer - Empty Towers
Another band and release from 2010 most people probably looked over.

19. Library Voices - Denim on Denim
Just as catchy as their EP, this band is a ton of fun and proof that Saskatchewan has some good music.

20. Steel Train - Steel Train
Good stuff.

21. Smoke or Fire The Speakeasy
This is not my favourite Smoke or Fire release, but it's grown on me regardless.

22. Four Year Strong Enemy of the World
I'll always have a soft spot for this band and this was a decent follow-up.

23. Alkaline Trio This Addiction
I like pretty much everything Alkaline Trio puts put and this is no exception.

24. Man Overboard Real Talk
Not even close to my favourite pop-punk release, but I still found it enjoyable.

25. Winter Gloves All Red
Catchy and I like the bass.

26. Mixtapes Maps
Decent, I think this band will probably get a little bigger in 2011.

27. Paper Arms Days Above Ground
One of my favourite discoveries from the Absolute100.

28. The Wonder Years The Upsides
This record took forever to grow on me.

29. Grown Ups More Songs
Another record that took some time to grow on me, but when it did I was hooked.

30. Cancer Bats Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones
I don't listen to very much heavier music, but I do love Cancer Bats and I like this record.

Best Live Shows

Maybe it was because I endured the busiest school year of my life, but it seemed like a pretty slow year for Winnipeg. These are the ones that truly stood out:

NOFX, Teenage Bottlerocket and Tony Sly @ The Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg, MB on April 26th
I've been waiting for NOFX to play here for years and they ruled. I love it when bands interact with the crowd and do more than just play their songs like they do. Plus Teengage Bottlerocket was awesome too and they covered Propagandhi because they were in their hometown.

The Flatliners, Broadway Calls and Cobra Skulls @ The West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg, MB on April 15th
Again, I've been waiting two years for a Broadway Calls show and I'm glad I got one. It sucks it was a smaller turnout, but the people who were there were really stoked to be there and all the bands gave it their all, especially Cobra Skulls.

The Gaslight Anthem, The Menzingers and Fake Problems @ The Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg, MB on September 6th
All these bands made my top 10 favourite records of 2010 and their live shows were great too.

Against Me!, The Flatliners and Young Livers @ The Garrick in Winnipeg, MB on September 16th
There's nothing like seeing Against Me! in a small, but packed venue. Plus The Flatliners sounded absolutely amazing that night, even better than in April and better than all the years I've seen them previously.

Every Time I Die, Four Year Strong, Polar Bear Club and Trapped Under Ice at The Garrick in Winnipeg, MB on March 19th.
It was OK, I think Four Year Strong need to stop opening shows they do here and start headlining.

Most Anticipated for 2011

Panic! at the Disco
I love Brendon's voice and I want to see what they come up with.

Protest the Hero
My favourite live band and one of Canada's all time best.

Mockingbird Wish Me Luck
I'm really interested to hear what their full-length for Dine Alone Records will sound like.

Blink-182
This is probably an obvious choice, but whatever.

Taking Back Sunday
Another obvious choice, but whatever again.

And that's it. Thanks for checking out my interviews and the Canadian Round-Up since those seem to be the main things I do around here. It's appreciated!

Yeah, they've truly made their best record yet.

I don't think I've ever interacted with you on this site before, but you have my favorite list.

Thanks! And yeah, I'm pretty quiet around here. I should probably start posting a little more.

I hope my list looks more like yours next year. I feel like I missed out on a lot of punk releases this year but I'm gonna go back and check some out based on your list.

Haha. In all honesty Billy Talent almost made the Best Live Show category. But arena shows just aren't as good as small clubs.

Thanks, hope you like some of this stuff too!

Rad list! Not surprising, but still...Love most of what's on there! Particularly nice to see that Mixtapes, Iron Chic, and the Dopamines haven't gone wholly unignored by the staff!

Yeah, more people need to get on those bands. So good!
