I'm starting to a feel a sort of Stockholm Syndrome attraction to MBDTF as the best record of the year. One side of me wants to maintain that's it's not really that great lyrically and that some tracks are pretty forgettable... but the other side is buying into the argument that the record is some kind of epic soundscape marked by a sonic ambition that wasn't even close to being matched by another album this year.
Edit: I'm also pleasantly surprised by how high Contra has been on some pretty major lists. |
I think it all depends on how you value music. My number one criteria for greatness is in lyrics. If I can love a song removed of it's melodies and notes just by staring at the words on a page, it's a sign of a great song to me.
Of course, there are exceptions like for post rock, jazz, even classic coffeeshop music, etc.
Kanye's production and ambition behind it all was stellar. There's no doubt about that.
For me personally though, it's not lyrically anything special and therefore not sticking with me very well at all.
