Canadian Music Round-UpSmallman Retrospective:

I’ve been working on a retrospective for Smallman Records since as you may already know, the label closed its doors earlier this year. If you want the long story about why I'm doing this, head here. But all you need to know is that I’ll be sharing little chunks from my project in this space. Today's excerpt comes from Moneen, one of the label's most well known bands who got their career started on the label nearly a decade ago now. It all started when Layaway Plan played a show with them when touring through Ontario. They were so blown away from their chaotic live performance that they told the label and before long, Rob Krause was on the phone with Kenny Bridges. Since the Moneen guys were all huge fans of another Smallman act, Choke, they decided to take their band outside of Ontario and meet up with them on a tour:

“I remember the first time we actually toured," says Bridges. "We drove the straight 32 hours to get to Winnipeg. We got there, loaded in and I remember we saw all the outlets by parking spots and we were like ‘What’s with that? Do people have crazy tailgate parties all the time here?’ And then when our van didn’t start the next morning, we realized why those were there."

“I’m pretty sure that first show was at the Albert,” remembers Krause. “And then they came back on their way back and played this place where the Giant Tiger is now. It used to be a bar, I can’t remember the name of it. It was hilarious because they had a van that didn’t really put out a lot of heat so they were all in giant hoodies. And their moms had just packed them so much food, the van was filled with cans and cans of food. It was awesome, they were all like 18 and 19 having the greatest time ever.”

“But yeah, we rolled down and we called Rob Krause,” says Bridges. “I don’t know why we expected he’d drop everything and meet us in the cold parking lot, but I remember calling him and being like ‘Hey man, we’re here, we made it to Winnipeg!’ And he was like ‘Oh, OK, well I’ve got to work. I’ll meet you guys later.’ So our first time in Winnipeg we just roamed around in malls and met some pretty wacky people. Then we met up with the Smallman guys in their office and our minds were blown. We were like ‘Oh my God, you guys have a real office, this is amazing. And it’s in a house. You have a house office. Oh my God!’ We were just freaking out, right? It was so exciting. And I think eventually we ended up signing a contract with them in a Tim Hortons.”

This could be a long shot, but if anyone else cares about Smallman Records/their bands and have any stories from over the years, I'd love you forever if you could email/PM them to me. Especially if you've attended one of the Smallman Records tours. This will be a weekly thing from now on too. I've interviewed almost every band on the label and excerpts from their sections will be posted until they're all up.
