Featured Stream: Icarus the Owl

Posted by: Matthew Tsai (01/31/11)
Portland, OR's Icarus the Owl sound something like Gatsby's American Dream meets Minus the Bear. Their EP, Qualia, drops today - head over to their AP.net Profile to stream the whole thing, and read a review of it here. Let us know what you think in the replies.

Wasn't this one of the bands who tried one of those stupid "viral marketing" schemes that ended up being posted on the front page... that ultimately was a failure? If so, do not want.

I would have loved this several years ago. Not so much anymore. His voice doesn't do it for me.

Not seeing either of those influences. In fact, this is the exact stuff GAD rages against. It sounds like all the post-Coheed stuff from the past few years.

The musicianship is excellent, the songwriting is great, and I'm excited to see what this band flowers into in the future.

The vocals do bring it down a bit, a little too much with the high pitch and "drag-along" vocals.

I was aiming for a general "quirky pop punk meets finger tapping" with the RIYL. Admittedly I'm not the best at drawing comparisons haha.

@RazorCrusade They're still a developing band trying to pin down a sound, but I don't know if I'd call this the exact stuff GAD rages against. If anything, there's some intelligent pop punk being written. The last track is a jam.
