I see this as along the same lines as the Janet Jackson Super Bowl fiasco. Even if the academy does take fear to losing viewers and bestows their awards on more "pop" music in the future, it's already done. Arcade Fire will forever be known (to me at least) as the mighty band that took town the even mightier celebs. When the "competition" was busy being covered by tabloids, calling out beefs, and filming music videos in next to no clothing, Arcade Fire kept playing music and making music.
Pretty valid statement.
Also, also, love Win Butler's excerpt of the acceptance speech: "We're going to go play another song because we like music".
