Chixdiggit! - Safeways Here We Come EP
Record Label: Fat Wreck Chords
Release Date: February 15th, 2011

Who?

Hailing from Calgary, Chixdiggit! has been making music for 20 years and this is their newest material since 2005. Basically, they’re a light hearted pop-punk band that writes songs that are just as goofy as their name. Chupacabras, J.Crew and toilet seats are just some of the many random topics they’ve tackled over the years.

How is it?

Typical Chixdiggit! Not that it’s a bad thing, but this is the sort of EP you’d expect the band to make. It totally sounds like they picked up right where Pink Razors left off and the opening track “Miso Ramen” is a perfect example of this. It has the crunchy power chords and infectious chorus that will get stuck in your head, right before launching into a simple, but rocking, guitar solo. And perhaps the most defining part is still K.J. Jansen’s vocals. Plenty of people might find them a little grating, but they sound as good as ever and no one sings quite like he does.

“I Hope Things Will Turn Around” is as serious as the band gets, with Jansen offering some heartfelt lines throughout the tune. “I Hate Basketball” is pretty self explanatory and most bands couldn't pull off a song like this, but Chixdiggit! make it work. Just like “Hot n Horny,” which is short and sweet at only 44 seconds. If you want to relax and mindlessly sing along with some super fun pop-punk tunes, Safeways Here We Come has got you covered. Just don’t expect anything more.

Track Listing1. Miso Ramen
2. Swedish Rat
3. Since You Got a Dog
4. Found Love
5. Hot n Horny
6. I Hate Basketball
7. I Hope Things Will Turn Around

Recommended If You LikeBlink-182's humour, NOFX, the Descendents

Backed fully! Sure, they're predictable. But holy hell are they fun! I would also add the Copyrights, Mixtapes, the Ergs!, and MxPx to that RIYL.

Agreed, especially about MxPx. Can't believe I forgot about them.

never listened to them, but since punk is pretty much dead I've gone back and started to get into older punk bands. RIYL looks right up my alley, will check this out!

Meh. What are you really into? I bet I can share some recs that you dig. There's plenty still out there--it's just harder to find these days.

haha idk, 90s punk is my bread and butter. NOFX, old AFI, Face To Face, Strung Out, Lagwagon, Millencolin.... stuff that would be on Warped Tour 10+ years ago lol. recs are always appreciated. I miss Fat Wreck Chords samplers haha.

Maybe I'm an asshole, but I refuse to listen to this based on the band's name.

Glad you'll check this out!

But I have to agree with him, there's still some good stuff being put out. I think you should check out the new Fat Wreck sampler if you miss the old ones. They've got some awesome newer bands like The Flatliners. Red Scare is another label you should look into, The Menzingers in particular. I could go on, but I won't.

I'll go on, then! The Copyrights, the Dopamines, Off With Their Heads, Dear Landlord, Mixtapes, Iron Chic, and Heartsounds should all be right up your alley if that whole 90's pop-punk rock thing was right up your alley. And--as Deborah--stated, the Menzingers would be rad as well! The Riot Before is another good one. Oh! And We Are the Union and and and and...Yeah. There's lots of good/fun bands.

Let me know if you want me to narrow it down a bit more. Otherwise? Have fun!
