Wonderland Dementation Dept. - The Awkward Silence

Reviewed by: Tom Good (03/06/07)
Wonderland Dementation Dept.The Awkward Silence
Record Label: Mind Riot Records
Release Date: July 2005

Who:
Swedish four piece punk rock /hardcore band who describe themselves as the “New sound of critical thought” and “mental gerilla warfare”.

How Is it?
This is one of the most politically charged albums this side of Anti-Flag so if anti-authority is your thing, then check this out as it is dripping with angst. Mixing styles of old school hardcore and Oy! Oy! punk rock, Wonderland Dementation Dept. succeed about half of the time with the other half sounding like a band trying too hard to be edgy. The galloping hardcore is good for what it is, but it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. When the band strays from the generic fast paced hardcore, such as on “Lives Of The Dead”, echoes of early At The Drive-In are evident and create an atmosphere of subtle political debate. However, this is a rarity as a lot of this album is anything but subtle with in your face political commentary that is difficult to ignore and unfortunately might detract a lot of potential listeners. Vocalist Daniel Palm has a unique voice that sounds a little like a mixture of Jim Ward (Sparta, ATDI) and Dennis Lyxzén of Refused fame. There is no doubt that he is talented when his strengths (the softer moments and his actual singing) are utilized, but these times are rare as he uses his Dexter Holland like yell most of the time. If you are looking for something to help you get in the mood for some political debate, then you might find some acceptable company on The Awkward Silence. If you are like me however, then you will just pop in your copy of In Casino Out instead.
